ELP's Love Beach despite it's excellent cover is a good example of totally fake yacht rock bandwagon jumping. And no matter how hairy were their chests or how much coke was in their yacht cabins these brit proggers still sounded fake. Who else is guilty?

Wouldn't a part of 1976 onward Fleetwood Mac apply? How about the Eagles?

I suppose the corollary would be if there was a yacht rock band out there somewhere trying to make people think they were prog. Like if the liner notes described a 45 minute suite about a mechanized armadillo playing chess in outer space against a robotic Ayn Rand during the Renaissance, but it turned out to sound like Pablo Cruise.

Um, maybe the Yachts? The song "Yachting Type," from their 1979 debut album, was darn catchy.

No, I think these guys made some great genuine classic yacht rock records that defined the genre. ELP on the other hand sucked.:shh:

  14. I'd take the best of the yacht rock era (really West Coast AOR like Seals & Crofts, Doobie Bros., the better records of Toto, etc.) over 99% of what critics think constitute "good music."

As for proggers, Jon Anderson made a pretty good yacht rock album with "In the City of Angels." ELP's efforts in that arena were dire except for about half of the "3" album.

  18. Toto has done this. Ever heard "Hydra" or "Better World" or "Drag Him To the Roof?" But they are good players; it kind of works.

Some of the songs on Wings' "London Town" was recorded on a yacht.

Why am I reminded of the video for "Rio" by Duran Duran?
