Declining Interest In Our Classifieds Thread?

  1. Read a classified started a couple of months back and recently updated, in which the seller is trying to sell a DCC CD. After doing a lot of research using the search engine for this site and then a private search engine for older ebay auctions, I found the sellers price is way too high. The seller even after several months was barely willing to budge on the price. Fair enough, I guess? Then the seller apparently received an offer through PM that they felt was too low, the seller then wrote that they would just keep the CD and stated "Thread Closed". I feel this was very childish and unprofessional. Nearly tantamout to a temper tantrum from a 2 year old. The fact that the seller added a smiley to their post in no way diminishes their behavior. Guess he or she is now "punishing" us by not letting us purchased their way overpriced CD?

I have not yet purchased through the classified's, and seeing ads like that make me serious consider ever doing so. Of course being as low on funds like I am may very well preclude that anyhow.

A seller has every right to close a sale thread if they don't want to sell an unsold item at a lower price. I don't see what's "very childish and unprofessional" about that.

Sange, do you honestly believe because I purchased my Heart DCC for $40 back in 2000 that I should sell it for that? As particular CD's become rarer and less available they will go up in value. Just the reality of life.

Oh, by the way, do you happen to have a 1963 Corvette Roadster split back window convertible in mint condition for sale for $4000.00? I sure could use one.

:shake: Nope, they'll be prying my only copy out of my cold dead hands when I pass. Just making a point.

Intresting, I don't buy or sell CDs seems like a lot more drama than buying and selling vinyl on the forum.

It's the announcement that the sale is closed that does seem a bit odd sometimes. The thread has already died a natural death (or will soon) without posts or bumps. In some cases the "this sale is closed" declaration does come off with some attitude, intentional or not.

I fairly often got PMs about items in older sale threads, that's why I now explicitly announce that a sale is closed and ask a gort to close the thread.

What could possibly be wrong with a seller stating that their thread is closed? That is their way of saying that the item is no longer for sale for whatever reason. In some cases, a seller simply decides not to lower the price, as was already said. In other cases, the seller decides to move the item to eBay. Obviously sellers do not only mark old threads that have naturally died as closed. I regularly see recent threads marked as closed. I've even seen some sellers do it the same day that they launched a thread.

Anyway, whatever. I don't see why this is an issue. Sellers are doing everyone, including themselves, a favor when they mark their threads closed.

I don't see what the fuss is all about either and I really don't understand why not wanting to lower a price and subsequently closing a sale is "childish and unprofessional", as was posted earlier

I've received offers on discs listed in a Thread that i've announced as "closed". The reason I mention this is due to listing elsewhere, or i've decided to keep the said Item. Simple

Or in the eye of the paranoid...Honestly it is amazing to me how many people can read other people's minds and know their intentions.

Judging by the hysteria on the numerous Beatles remaster threads, I think the drop off in buying activity is happening because everyone is saving up for those 2 box sets.

$475 is a big bite out of our CD budgets.

Yeah, I'm about ready to call it quits.

I'm offering stuff at rock-bottom prices and still nothing.

I guess the AC/DC DualDisc will be my last post for a long while.

Gentlemen, two things are at play here. One, we are in the common annual dead zone for sellers at this time of year with people on vacation. Two, the economy sucks harshly for most and entertainment goods are always at the forefront of budget reductions to survive. Please, try not to take it so hard and personally.

    Dave,

In my experience things have been pretty slow here for the last couple of years or so.

It's tough to compete with Amazon. I hope you don't mind me saying, but you can get that dualdisc at Amazon new for a bit more than your price or used for a bit less. That puts you right in the middle. Fair price or not, that is a tough place to be when you are selling something.

I saw a used SACD in the classifieds recently with an asking price that was $4 more than the new price on Amazon. The asking prices in the classified could be fair based on what was originally paid, but when it is an item that is available on Amazon or Amazon Marketplace, you have to compete with those truly rock-bottom prices. I have held off listing some items here for this very reason.

I agree with this. I try to use Amazon and half.com to set my prices. For the classic jazz that I traffic in, there are often numerous different issues and remasters of the same title. So buyers here may appreciate a bit more certainty that they'll get exactly what they thought they were getting, which is often not the case with Amazon.

But that only takes you so far, and if I can't beat or at least match Amazon's price for the same CD, I conclude that it is not worth my time to list an item for sale here. I just assume that most people comparison shop like I do.

Considering Amazon takes 15% commission and offers more real protection to the buyer than the forum, plus more payment options and seamless ordering, sellers here might consider undercutting Amazon fairly substantially if they intend to sell quickly.

Just a thought...I'd be curious to know the average age of our Forum members and if they are still in the workforce or at another stage of life without as many financial pressures. For me, I am many many years from retirement, struggling and working hard to maintain my business in this economy with not much discretionary income. Trust me, it's so hard to see items in our Classifieds that I can't buy.
