The Retroactive liner notes say for "Desert Song" - "A musical idea completed during the Hysteria sessions, this song remained unrecorded due to the fact that lyrics were never written for it. Still lyricless, the backing track was finally completed in 1993 when Joe came up with the words on a day off in Portugal during the European 7 Day Weekend Tour."

Fractured Love - "The first song to come out of the Hysteria writing sessions but left on the shelf until 1993 when we rewrote the intro and finally settled on an arrangement."

Fractured Love was mentioned by the band in interviews as early as 1985 so between the album sessions and the b side sessions there's 2 different versions in the can. Which one was used for Retroactive is unknown.

The Classic Album doc is awesome as you mention. I believe the DVD with the bonus features can be found pretty cheap. What is frustrating to me is that a big part of the doc is showing all of the neat sounds and studio tricks that are buried in the tracks yet there is no 5.1 mix of Hysteria to fully enjoy the sonics!

Really a shame that after all these years this album hasn't been given a 5.1 mix. It screams for one. Multiple deluxe editions now, and they still haven't done this.

I remember reading that "Tear It Down" was performed at that show. That should have been included this time along with anything else missing. I loved that original guitar solo and arrangement and how the rhythm guitars and backing vocals sounded. The Adrenalize version didn't do anything for me.

No "Swing 625". Single edits seem like a waste of space. I'm not holding my breath that the remastering of the original CD and B-sides won't be too loud like the previous Deluxe. The originals weren't bad in the first place although I'd like to get the MSFL of the original if it is too loud here. I have all of the original B-sides, remixes and video releases so this just seems like duplication.

Maybe because of their rocky relationship with Universal, Universal didn't want to put a lot of money into this effort and is just looking for as much profit as possible. I wonder if the remastering will even be different than the previous Deluxe or if it will be recycled from that.

Interesting, but I'm not a crazy fan of the album. I kind of stopped at Pyromania. :)

This is a good boot although it is only mono. Still very good soundboard and the only place to hear Run Riot performed live in the prime era that I know of. You can even hear someone say they hate the song before it starts on one of the versions. Haha.

I was searching online and came across an 1989 interview with Steinman concerning Hysteria from Kerrang. Interesting to hear his side after all these years of the band slagging him ---

It was a total eclipse of the charts, and Jim Steinman, the hotshot
hitmaker reborn, was chosen to produce Def Leppard's follow-up to their
    multi-platinum 'Mutt' Lange-produced monster 'Pyromania.'

"It was a weird time," says Steinman. "Mutt Lange is totally insane. He
has nervous breakdowns as part of his process of making records! He mixes,
remixes and has a nervous breakdown. That's why they're always finished up
by his engineers, Nigel Green or Mike Shipley.

"I went to Dublin to meet the band, where they were living in tax exile.
They're great kids, but they were like little boys lost."

"While I was talking to them, Rick Allen came up behind me and said, 'I
really want to be on this record.'

"I said, 'Hey! You're the drummer, you'll be on the record!' And then I
found out he isn't even on 'Pyromania', it's all machines. He isn't on
    'Hysteria' either.

"So we get the drum machine out, like Mutt says, and program it. Rick
starts to play along, and he's really good! He was as good as any rock 'n'
roll drummer I've ever worked with. So we use all live drums.

"Mutt comes down two weeks into recording, (He had helped the band during
pre-production but originally opted out of producing. - Ed.) listens to a
little of the drums, which sound perfect to me. And he goes, 'What are you
doing? You're gonna throw these poor kids careers' in the toilet!' This
was with the drummer right there! So we have to do the drums his way.

"Joe Elliot was the hardest to get along with. He's got a great really low
voice, and a great high voice, but he has a real problem in the middle
registers. So we start on a verse, and it's in the middle registers and
    he's having trouble."

"So I said, 'Let's skip onto the chorus to get you going,' because that
was higher. It was good, so I say, 'Lets do another track,' and after a
while he comes storming in the control room and says 'What the f**k are
    you doing?'

"It turns out that when Mutt does vocals, he uses one track and he won't
let him go on to the second line of the song until he has the first line
right! And he keeps erasing the first line till it's right! Joe was going,
'How am I supposed to feel the song if I'm jumping to the chorus!'

"It's a very bizarre set-up there. I got sick of it after about four
months. Mutt did almost everything. He created them, and they were lost
    without him."

Correct, these were the original B-side versions, just remastered. Better, too, as is the original B-side "Demo" version of "Tear It Down", which IMHO, absolutely smokes the reworked one on Adrenalize.

I prefer the version on Adrenalize and also the re-recorded versions on RetroActive. Ride Into The Sun the first version from 1978-1979 is also very interesting.

all of DL's outtakes and b-sides can be found out on the web. No need to buy this re-issue, which will be compressed to death.

Very interesting interview. Thank you. Wow, sometimes the more I read things, the more I wish I didn't lol. Is that really true that Rick isn't on either Pyromania or Hysteria? I wonder about the Hysteria b-sides.

I know there are a lot of triggers Rick uses but I always thought that he played on Hysteria especially how the band has portrayed his comeback in videos.

    Pyromania??
I'll have to give that a closer listen.

I have to admit that there's only certain bands where I really pay attention to the drums. With Def Leppard, I'm usually focused on the awesome guitars and the first two albums are by far my favorites.

Now I can hear it on Pyromania. I guess that's why I never cared for the drum sound on it. I had put that album away for many years after overplaying it growing up but I feel like I was living under a rock not realizing it was a drum machine.

I think I remember them saying they cut the B-sides for Hysteria live. I know Mutt didn't produce those and told them to save them and not use them as b-sides. I wonder if that's Rick on his kit or a machine.

Steinman has always been bitter about the whole thing despite making a ton of money for very little work. I just hope the In The Round audio has been properly mastered. And I'm still waiting for a Blu-Ray of it as well.

Interesting no mention of a hi res release. I remember that compensation of digital sales was one of the issues they have had with Universal, thus the re-recordings of certain old songs. They don't have a single hi res release. Hi res nicely done of the first four albums plus bonus tracks would be sweet.

Listen to the drum fills on "Photograph", really obvious it is not live drumming.

Pretty sure I read the drums on Hysteria at least are programmed but the hi hat and cymbals were played by Rick.
