that's my impression on these and i have bought them all, though I have all the original cds too...they just sound so much better to my ears... not sure why people are calling them loud...they are in no way brickwalled which might be inferred.
Agreed. The remasters aren't brickwalled at all. The overall volume level is a bit higher than the original CDs, of course, but the dynamics are still intact. If you wanna see brickwalled Depeche Mode, pick up the Singles 81>85 and Singles 86>98 comps released in 1998 -- those were compressed to hell and brickwalled, with almost nonstop clipping. I haven't heard the SACD layer of the 2006/2007 hybrids, but the redbook layer's remastering is certainly not brickwalled or lacking in dynamics.
Here's a good place to get you started with the 2006-2007 remasters campaign. http://remasters.depechemode.com/ And no, they weren't only remastered on SACD. The US versions of the remasters actually had no SACD layer, and the European remasters were SACD hybrids (which had a CD layer that could be played on any player).
all my remasters are US 2 disc sets, 1 cd and 1 dvd... now the EU 2 disc sets are 1 SACD and 1 DVD.. so if you have SACD capability, and some dough to spare, those are worthy, but the DVDs would be PAL i would think...problematic if you need NTSC. the DVDs IMHO are amazing views.
Went ahead and checked my disc and sure enough it is there. weird, maybe my old SACD changer was dying when I played it....
Yes. They're louder than the pre-2006 discs, but as DJ Wilbur has said, they are anything but overdone/brickwalled. Some of the Black Celebration tracks really benefited from Heyworth's remastering.
I didn't call remasters "brickwalled", I called them "loud". There is a difference. Remasters (esp. SACDs) are good, but they have processed sound, clean and very digital, and original cds (esp. from 1981 to 1986) have so called "breath of life" for me. They are very smooth and music surrounds you, though it's only stereo. Mute recordings from 80's were greatly done and mastered and in my opinion remasters are worth only for 5.1 Don't get me wrong, they are very good, but you have to listen to originals.
i just pointed out earlier that some might infer the definition of "loud" as modern brickwalled which the remasters are not clearly as you are also stating, so anyone reading this thread needs to understand the newer versions are louder but the dynamics are intact and in no way are they compressed and must avoids. you used some adjectives when describing the remasters that often define Depeche Mode music for me...Clean and Processed, thats what they do IMHO. not sure how much breath of life can really reside in electronic music anyway, but I'm A/Bing and not really hearing this extra air on my system, anyway...we've both got various versions of their titles, we each prefer the opposites which is what makes this place so interesting... as long as people listen to DP, that's what counts...everything counts...
Are these reissues the same mastering as the first releases? If so I can get these in the used bins very simple.

Picked up Music for the Masses on Sire today, in one of the charity record shops in Edinburgh today. Utterly delighted with it. Great album (if this didn't inspire Muse in places, I don't know what did) - a real find.
If it's the original and not the remastered version, tracks 11-14 are bonus tracks but not labelled as such, FWIW. The proper album ends with Pimpf.
The info on the rear of the jewel case mentions the four extra tracks, but is a US pressing. The cat no on the spine reads 9 25614-2, so am assuming this is an early WEA release as they labelled the later ones with the full "7599-..." afterwards?
I'm an idiot, I just have the remaster and when I looked at the original US CD on DepMod, I missed the four additional songs notation. I was looking for a "BONUS TRACKS" indicator in the track list. Not sure what you mean about the catalog number as 925614-2 is the only one I see on DepMod for the retail 14 track Sire CD.
Been playing their trilogy MFTM, V & SOFAD this christmas. What a great band... Have the 2006 remasters of all titles. They are loud, but still sound great!
