the half-million dollar judgement against CBS was thrown out today, a reporter on TV mentioned the incident had derailed Janet's career for a few years...not so; her cd sales had been diminishing, and continued to do so after the incident, but I think it was due to a lack of new ideas, and advancing age in a youth-oriented market...I think the malfunction was neutral...anyone agree with the reporter?

I think her sales and popularity were diminishing prior to the "wardrobe malfunction", which lead me to believe that said incident was but a desperate publicity stunt.

Her music and popularity had been on the decline before the incident, there was a song on one of her albums that sounded like nothing more than a Twix television jingle (the one with the Carly Simon sample). Oddly enough, not wanting to mature and keep yourself forever young has worked for Mariah Carey. The material is the same, but Carey has a better voice (IMHO). Jackson has done some great songs but a need to push the envelope stopped for her. It's that ever popular thing known as being "relevant", and unfortunately it seems to happen to a lot of singers.

It certainly didn't help her career, but she was already past her prime in 2004. I lost interest in her music with the release of The Velvet Rope in 1997 because the subject matter and music style ceased to be interesting to me, and this probably applied to a lot of older fans.

Only to people who believe the hype!

It amazes me that people couldn't see that it was a mistake, an accident, it wasn't supposed to happen, it was exactly what it's called a malfunction. It's been said over and over, Justin Timberlake was supposed to pull of a piece of her garment, but the whole thing came loose instead.

What person with any amount of common sense, intelligence, rational thinking, brains, would believe that the woman would want to intentionally do something like that on a nationally televised show, especially one that she knows children are watching?

Excuse me, I keep forgetting, common sense isn't very common in this world today! People would rather believe the very worste!

I don't think it harmed her career. I've heard her talked about more since then than I had in the previous ten years.

I think the lack of a recent Billboard top 10 is just a natural progression for an over-40 pop star. Not too many make a dent in the charts by that age beyond the initial sales rush of a new album by longtime fans.

Janet Jackson? Who's that? Oh yeah, she's Michael Jackson's kid sister. She made a couple of good albums in the 80s, right? I thought she died in a plane crash!:) Just kidding!

What ruined her career is lousy music. Her last few CDs stunk! Instead of setting trends, she started to followed them. A good song here and there isn't enough.

  10. I don't think so - her career was already in steep decline. If she would have been still in her prime this would have only increased her record sales IMHO.

I always liked her music since I first heard the JANET album. I don't really get into the 80s stuff besides "Love Will Never Do Without You". THE VELVET ROPE was good too (especially the title track and "Got Til It's Gone").

I haven't really heard too much music from her since she sang on Shaggy's "Mister Lover" song (or whatever it was called).

Funny, hardly anyone remembers what the heck Justin and Janet performed that night. I certainly don't.

I've heard her new CD is okay but it doesn't sound like her (i.e. it doesn't sound like Jam & Lewis) and it's too contemporary. I actually did not know that I'd been hearing her new song on the radio until I saw the video for it. I kind of did a double-take when I saw her appear. Wow, Janet Jackson's in the video for this song.... wait... This is Janet Jackson singing this song??!!

Her career was kind of going downhill which is sad because she put out some good grooves.

    She still looks great, though.

I think all The Jacksons need to get together and do a tour or album. "VICTORY PART II". :D

I agree that the wardrobe malfunction didn't kill her career but that musical malfunctions did. Her last couple of records have been just tragic. Janet Jackson has never been a solo act. It was always Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, & Janet Jackson: The Janet Jackson Band. Without Jam & Lewis, she's nothing.

    Well...she can sing.

I'd love to her what she could do with an old-school type recording, with actual songs. I'll bet she would be great.

I doubt she would have been hosting "Saturday Night Live" two months later if it weren't for the notoriety... not just musical guest, but actual host.

It's the only publicity she's had in a decade, so -- no.

  21. I definitely don't think it killed her career. It was already in a decline.

She was never a career artist. She sold bigtime for a short while, owing to image and the right disposable sound at the right time. This kind of artist has a limited shelf life and her's has past. If anything, I would say the wardrobe malfunction extended her 15 minutes by a minute or so.

But no, her slip into irrelevancy is due to the ephemeral nature of her releases, not due to nipplegate.

  25. Sounds pretty naive to me.

And it worked, sort of, for a while.
