    Spirit of America

I like it but I view it as not quite a classic. I like Brian's singing but the lyric is awkward.

    3/5

Spirit is not one of my favourites but it is a surprisingly topical song for the Beach Boys. 3/5

    "Cherry Coupe"
This track is cherry :nyah:. Mike Love invents new words with "cellunoid." 4/5

    "Car Crazie Cutie"
This is a mediocre cut, and it's miles away from "Cherry Cherry Coupe". Mike should have sung this instead of Brian. Brian sings this poorly and indistinctly. 3/5

    "Spirit of America"
Beautiful stuff here with Brian's falsetto: one of his best falsettos in the canon. The lyrics are really inspirational too, from the pen of Roger Christian.

I wish he wouldn’t have put that sax on the intro

Couldn't disagree more on CCC. Mike would have bleated the crap out of that song like he did with most of the early songs. It was refreshing to hear Brian take an occasional lead as he did here and he absolutely nails it. In fact, Brian could have nailed Cherry and many others of that era far better than nasal Mike did. Why? Because of the fact that Brain was an incredible vocalist who could sing circles around Mike Love.

No Go - a very strong 3/5... love the vocal arrangement - it moves along the song especially when they are singing the title words, coupled with the instrumentation behind it

Love the vocals, but the lyrics...with all the feeling BW puts into vocals, I imagine a non-English speaker might imagine a song with dramatic emotional imagery, not a song about a land speed record making jet car.

On the other hand, the song does impart a kind of zeitgeist, a feeling of awe about breaking records, about the new frontiers and opportunities ahead, kind of like the feeling The Tornados' Telstar did a bit earlier.

    3/5 from me.

That's how I feel about it. I actually love the song, but for the vocals, not the lyrics. And again, this is one of those tunes that only The Beach Boys, only BW could pull off with that wailing falsetto. I used to have a cover/comp album with this song covered by another group and it was very, very sad. Should never have been attempted.

    3/5

There is a an oddball French language cover by Petula Clark with completely re-written lyrics titled J'ai Pas Le Temps. Been a very long time since I last heard it.

I agree there is a real disparity between the sort of grandiosity of the melody and the vocal arrangement and the humorous lyrics. Both music and lyrics are good, but it's an odd wedding. The backing track is great.. The backing tracks are more developed on Little Deuce Coupe than they were on Surfer Girl: more saxes, the brief 6 piece line-up of two guitars/piano/bass/drums makes the sound fuller too.

    I give it 4/5.

Spirit Of America- never saw the appeal, find it a bit dull. I’m going 2/5

No Go Showboat- good uptempo song, nothing distinguishing beyond the chorus and good lyrics, but solid. 3/5.

The album overall- for a rush job it’s pretty passable, but easily one of my least favourite because the new songs aren’t that memorable. 2/5

I'll be out this weekend, so I wanted to vote early.

A Young Man is Gone. 2/5. I know this is very well done, great harmonies. And I know the Four Freshmen were a huge influence. Only problem is for me I don't care for this kind of song.

Custom Machine. 4/5. One of my favorites from this album. I know its silly, but it totally works.
