I like "Monkey's Uncle". Great backing vocals. Very catchy. I'm not sure how to grade it, since it's for something else. Solid 3, I guess.

Monkey's Uncle. 2/5. It's not bad, and kind of fun, but as Monty Python would say much too silly.

"Monkey's Uncle." 2/5. Makes me envision a threesome between Annette Funicello, Kurt Russell and his pet chimpanzee. That's gotta be worth something.

My daughters (5 and 3) absolutely adore this song. It's silly and light, but quite catchy. Fun and harmless bubblegum pop. Solid 3.

Incidentally, there's a great cover of this one by the Fendertones from a few years back.

Annette’s vocal is spirited but it really is a bit of an embarrassment. 2/5

I actually quite like the song, and I admit it's dumb and I'll bet it was an embarrassment. I think I remember reading it was recorded in 1964 (could be wrong about that) and the movie was shot that year, but its release was delayed until the following year. So The Beach Boys get to back Annette during the time when The Beatles, The Byrds, The Rolling Stones are looking and sounding progressively cooler and we get to see Mike Love frugging with Annette.

Still, great energetic BBs vocals, cool Carl Wilson lead break and I even think the dumb aspect adds something to the tune.

    3/5

Yes, it was recorded right around the time All Summer Long was finished, in spring or summer ‘64.

It speaks a great deal of teen culture of the mid 60's. 3/5

Spirited performance, but not a very musical choice of tune for a very musical band. Dramatic example of how much pop music had changed in the five or six or so years between the time this was recorded and The Olympics' original.

Great Mike Vocal, too. This may be his greatest album, vocal-wise.

I must admit I don't play "Party" nearly as much as I should. It's one of those things. I never really feel compelled to listen to it yet when I do I generally like it and wonder why I avoid it. I think my AP vinyl is still sealed. Sheesh, what the hell is wrong with me?

"Hully Gully" - Great opener. Strong backing vocals. Terrific lead from Mike. Look for alternate version where they lapse into "Peanut Butter". Anything goes. It's a party, dammit. 5/5

Not to be too particular here, but I would say Monkey's Uncle was more about the early sixties than the mid sixties. The date it was made, 1964, seems like it should share more with the middle than early part of the decade. But I don't think the film much reflected anything that was different from the early sixties. Ms. Funicello herself was very much an early sixties star, actually for music more late fifties, music for her having petered out pretty much by 61. She then became associated with the Beach Party films, which started in 63 and lost popularity by the time it ended in 65. So yeah I'd say more early than mid sixties.

I didn't feel the need to get the AP vinyl, I have an original that never gets played. I got all the AP CDs except two, Party! and the first album. I did get the Unplugged/Expanded CD set. That's enough for how often I want to listen through the whole thing. Some of the "with party sounds" are my fave version - "Hully Gully" is one of those. A 4/5. Mike is In the Mood, with a great vocal. I think he enjoyed doing this record. Loose and easy. No stress, no fine tuning the vocals twenty times over.

I really liked this album more in 1965. It went over well at get-togethers with friends with guitars.

Wata, Glad you picked some of the extra tracks, I would have picked a few more.
