I read this article last week in the October 2-8th edition of the Queens Tribune, and thought it was interesting and cool enough to share. I'd usually just post a brief sentence, or two, with a link, but it's not currently in their archives. Therefore, here's the article in its entirety.

    DMC To Go Solo
    Queens Tribune
    October 2-8, 2003

Queens native Darryl McDaniels, better known as DMC of hip
hop pioneering Run-D.M.C., is working on his solo debut,
"Checks, Thugs and Rock & Roll" as part of an effort to
establish his own label, DMC (Darryl's Music Company.)

Saying he wants to change his music, DMC has been listening
to classic rock -- Creedence Clearwater Revival, Pink Floyd,
the Rolling Stones -- because to him, new sounds serve as
    inspiration.

According to published reports, one of the songs on the
yet-to-be-released album, "Kat's in the Cradle," explores his
own adoption. Sarah McLachlan, who was also adopted,
contributes to the melodic refrain in the track. The album will
also include a tribute to Jam Master Jay, "I'm Missing a Friend."

DMC is quoted as saying, "I want to be the Bruce Springsteen,
Roy Orbison of music. I'm going to keep rapping, but I want to
try to make it better for everybody."

The solo album is due early next year.

I sincerely hope he is. I think there is nothing more noble to see someone take a music form and grow and mature it gracefully. Bruce is doing it, Dylan is doing it, I hope McDaniels does it. I want to see these wonderful artists on stage rocking and rapping loud and strong into their seventies, like Muddy or BB...

His voice isn't doing so hot from what I've heard/seen. I don't think he can shout or rap. If he strains his voice hard at all, it's done. He can barely speak for a while.

He's been working on this project for a LONG time. I'm anxious to hear it.

Grant Life is a rock, but the radio rolled me!

    Maybe that's why Tone-Loc gave up rapping!

Exactly what I was thinking... maybe the success of genre-bending records like the new Outkast will help pave the way.

Or it could suck mightily! :D
