Yeah, quite a fan. Not a expert, but I like what I like in the genre.
Blut As Nord, (early) Alcest, (early) Ulver, Lantlos, Winterfylleth, Myrkur, Swallow The Sun, Agalloch, Satyricon. Do Behemoth count?
Anyway, I love what I do know, tho there's much more i need to check out.

Only in the summertime on a sunny day. I have this metal lawn chair that is painted black, and I forget and sit on it after it has been in the sun and immediately defile the English language.

Hate is a strong word. Not sure I hate any genre of music. Under the right conditions, in the right frame of mind, I can listen to anything. I might dislike something, but hate ...?

To be honest, if I found out that you had made up all those band names I wouldn't be surprised! ;)

Black Metal is a terrible genre name but there are a couple of bands that I like that I believe are somewhere on the periphery: A Forest of Stars, whose album A Shadowplay For Yesterdays is just great, and Thy Catafalque (which is a new one to me and I'm just getting into them). The vocals do create something of an obstacle and I don't like blast beats, but I can see them as the logical descendants of Celtic Frost, which is a band that I definitely liked at the outset of their career. I guess I like the "theatre" of Black Metal and the fact that can mix in some non-Metal elements.

I don't think it is just black metal but a problem of Metal in general. After years of absence I got back into Iron Maiden and Judas Priest recently and got all sorts of strange reactions from friends and my girlfriend. Like this music was not to be taken seriously. At all...

Yep ... Symphonic Metal is where I get those looks. Very much along the lines that I must been pretending to like Jazz, Classical etc. all along and suddenly I've given it all away by listening to this utter dreck.

Do you like black metal? This is surely why your wife becomes your ex-wife..! :D

Seriously speaking, when I was younger I liked heavy metal and even now I have some friends of mine who regularly listen to black metal; but I never particularly loved black metal: it creates an atmosphere I have never perfectly felt in tune with: it's too cold, too icy. Yes, I love warm and sunny weather! :D

I only got into black metal a few years ago. I like it well enough, but I have to be in the right mood for it. I find the "scary" imagery kind of dopey but if I'm in a bad mood, a little Darkthrone will do me. But I tend to like the more inauthentic black metal bands that hardcore fans love to hate, such as Negura Bunget, Wolves in the Throne Room and Blut Aus Nord.

Technically impressive, somewhat musically and melody bereft. And the vocals...kill it dead in the first place for me.

I would love to get into black metal, but the vocals and intentionally poor production tend to turn me off. The wintery atmosphere makes me interested as I love darker edged thrash/gothic stuff like early Iced Earth and Type O Negative. Both of them have good strong vocals that are neither growls nor are they operatic, just right.

As a musician, and growing up with classic metal, I can appreciate it, but I guess I'm not that angry to really be in the mood for it.

How in the world has someone not even heard the phrase "black metal" before? This "music" forum cracks me up sometimes.

My favorites are Craft, Glorior Belli, Thornspawn & Judas Iscariot. I cannot stand endless blast beats.

You might try one of the bands I suggested in my earlier post to get your feet wet. The production is very clean and kind of antithetical to much traditional black metal. Atmospheric black metal can be relatively easy to get into, even with the harsh vocal delivery. Negura Bunget's "Om" is a fantastic place to start, IMO. Or perhaps Drudkh's "Autumn Aurora". Both of these albums are very dark, Gothic and artsy, almost progressive rock in a way. But they can get heavy as hell too. Just not the all out assault that some of the more celebrated bands like Mayhem, Immortal or Darthrone are. Enslaved are also a very popular band that are really very good and easy to take a lot of the time. They feature clean vocals on occasion too. You never know, you might get hooked.

I'm not familiar with it but if you like it that's what matters. Of course some things will be disliked by spouses, etc. My wife hates King Crimson. I love them.

A very misunderstood genre that's for sure.

Is anyone even going to mention the fact that black metal's outright/blatant hatred for all things Christian might be the hurdle some people have?

You love music enough to have been a member here since 2004, and posted over eighteen thousand times, and you never heard of black metal until now? Right....

Not to mention some (but not all) of it promotes white supremacy and a national socialist ideology.

  24. I don't hate black metal, but I would if I had to listen to it. Life is too short to waste on hate, despair and deliberately ugly vocals.

I don't know why it's so hard to believe someone hasn't heard of black metal before. If you don't follow heavy metal in general, you might not have heard the term. It's not like it's ever been mainstream music and a lot of it is more well known for the anti Christian antics and Varg Vikernes than the music itself.
