Is it just me or were Wagner/Hunter guitar duo a total mismatch for Lou Reed with their classic rock guitar sound/soloing? I would not go as far as proclaim it as betrayal of his proto-punk sonic aesthetics but still...

Lou's Rococo period. Restraint was not a color on that particular canvas.

Rock N Roll Animal is a great album but I'm happy they're only on that. They overplay and noodle too much. Much prefer Danny Weiss who played on Sally Can't Dance album and tour.

I love Hunter/Wagner on this album. There is a point to all that noodling and I'm sure Lou Reed knew what he was doing - using a classic rock template to introduce his greatest hits to the masses.

They played on the studio album, Berlin then R&R Animal. I wish they had recorded just one more studio album with Hunter & Wagner. I also wish they would put out a deluxe R&R Animal cd, there'e more music from those shows around.

the only lou reed albums (RnRA and LRL)i don't have in my collection.did like seeing the band live......just that the albums never did much for me......but good point in having lou's music appeal to the masses....this did seem to be his apex in terms of popular appeal...

It's a mismatch in theory. The album kicks ass. Buy the Legacy vinyl and blast it.

I agree that they are great on Rock And Roll Animal, an album that seems to allow Lou Reed to stretch out and let loose and gain some commercial appeal from it as well. They were fine on Berlin, too. They were restrained when they should have been.

It's just one short phase of Lou's career. Part of the variety that is Lou. It may not be my very favorite Lou, but I'm glad he did it, and glad to have it.

After the magnificence of The Tots, anything would seem like an anticlimax. Best band he ever had, for my money.

Don't know if you're serious, but I definitely prefer them to the Hunter/Wagner band.

I am serious, yes. American Poet is an immense Lou Reed live album.

I agree with you...I hate them. The live version of Sweet Jane is one of the worst live song ever. Funny thing is that they did the same lame job with Alice Cooper on Goes to hell...

There is an annoying quality to their guitar styles, kind if like G.E. Smith from SNL. When they play it sounds like "Hey, look at me go!" :thumbsdow

  21. I dig Hunter-Wagner & all...but yeah, Robert Quine's work with Lou Reed ("The Blue Mask", "Legendary Hearts", "Live In Italy", & "A Night With Lou Reed" DVD) represents an absolute peak guitar wise for Lou's solo career...honestly it's up there with The Velvet Underground & his old work with Sterling Morrison.

I've always been a big fan of R&R Animal (and to a lesser degree LRL).

Berlin is high on my list of greatest albums ever. I do love me some Bob Ezrin.

Great moment in Lou's legacy. That quick riff era with Hunter/Wagner In saying it might be guitar heavy might be an understatement. I played it to death in it's time.

I agree on Danny Weiss. Sally Can't Dance is just as much of a Guitar Album as Rock N Roll Animal and Lou Reed Live.
