Do you prefer Black Sabbath with Ozzy or with Dio?

The founding members of Black Sabbath - Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward and Ozzy Osbourne - had a gentlemen's agreement:

However, the Black Sabbath's record label insisted on using Black Sabbath name
when Dio replaced Ozzy .... and the rest is history.

Nevertheless, to me and many other fans:

There is one Ozzy, one Tony, one Geezer, one Bill and therefore only one Black Sabbath!

    I enjoy both.

There was a similar thread awhile back where this was discussed ad nauseam.

There is no Black Sabbath without Ozzy in my book, & I've REALLY tried to get into the Dio albums. Having said that, even the late period Ozzy albums pale in comparison to their earlier efforts.

I like the Dio-sung albums, but I prefer original Black Sabbath.

    I, also, prefer original Rainbow.

I enjoy both as well. Very much so. I think the Heaven & Hell record is great, too. I couldn't possibly pick one or t'other.

AGREED,100%! Ozzy's contributions to them cannot be denied! Dio's contributions are good, too, but for sheer control of the audience,no one held them in his grip quite like Ozzy!:righton:

The Dio era Sabbath stands on it's own as a great band who produced one of the best heavy metal albums of all time in Heaven and Hell. But the Ozzy era Sabbath is the greatest heavy metal band of all time and produced numerous classic albums. Paranoid was the second album I ever purchased (after Machine Head) and for me that is era I associate with Black Sabbath.

Force to make a decision - Ozzy. They never made a bad album with him. But the first two Dio albums are stone cold classics. The third - OK. This last one...sorry - it's not for me.

I do like both, and consider them to be 2 different bands.
If I had to only pick one it would be the Ozzy era Sabbath.
But then again my favorite albums are TE and NSD.

Did we really need another poll on this?

"There is one Ozzy, one Tony, one Geezer, one Bill and therefore only one Black Sabbath!"

This is a silly statement that makes no sense. All four members, even Ozzy, have performed as "Black Sabbath" in lineups other than the one mentioned.

  19. Prefer the Ozzy version as a band, but oddly my favorite Sabbath album is probably Heaven and Hell.

I picked "I Can't Decide" simoly cause I really like both a lot.
The only Ozzy Sabbath I listen to is the first 8, I can't take the Reunion album too much. And I like all 3 Dio Sabbath albums as well.

I love both, but I may have to give a slight edge to Dio.

I can't decide bacause I love both incarnations equally for different reasons. For me Sabbath had three great lineups. The original four, the Dio-Iommi-Butler-Ward lineup and the Dio-Iommi-Butler-Appice lineup. The first six Sabbath albums are classics and show why the band is revered to this day. Heaven & Hell shows a new band whose sound retains the heaviness of early Sabbath while updating the approach with faster tempos, tighter arrangements, and (gasp!) some melodic elements as well.
