My son went through a phase around age 7 to 11 where he was watching some old John Wayne films, the cavalry trilogy, Horse Soldiers, The Cowboys etc. He also watched They Died With Their Boots on and although not westerns the Errol Flynn Robin Hood and also Zulu which he re-watched multiple times. He is now 14 so is probably ready for some Clint Eastwood, if i can get him off the play station... (My son that is, not Clint)

Am I losing my mind, or was there a reply to my post that was deleted? I just got a chance to reply, and poof it was gone. I think it had to do with my favorite genres of westerns.

I haven't seen enough to develop a favorite genre yet, as I just got into them recently. I've mainly seen a few that are considered classics, so far (The Searchers, A Fistful of Dollars, etc). If anyone has any recommendations, let me know!

The Proposition is set in Australia, but it's a western, with some twists on the cliches

I'm not "young" (I'll be 48 next month) but I've never been big on Westerns. Not sure why. My Dad wasn't a big fan of them either, he preferred cops n robbers/spy stuff (which is probably why I like James Bond so much) so they were never on TV in my house when I was growing up.

I watch a ton of movies (my constant posts in the "Last Movie You Watched" thread here should be fair proof of that!), but I could probably count the # of Westerns I've seen in the past 20 years on one hand.

My 23 yo daughter is an "old movie" buff. She loves the musicals, crime noir, 30's -50's horror, ( although she didn't care for the Hammer Films stuff) any Lucille Ball and is addicted to the Turner classic channel. She will turn off any western that comes on, except for Calamity Jane. I wish she would tend to her studies the way she does old movies (and K-Pop).

I have seen most of the westerns mentioned here but there are only a few I would watch now if they came on - Once Upon a Time In the West and Unforgiven come to mind.

Not a movie, but Netflix has a western miniseries called Godless that is very good.

???? For the record, I LOVE Westerns and have since I was a child. Any fan of the genre recognizes that Silverado (and the other I recommended; Maverick) are totally intended as a love letter/homage to the classic Hollywood genre. They're extremely well done and totally work BTW. But if ya don't like Westerns, stay away!;)

    I really like that one.

I tend to like the more modern Westerns - Josey Wales, Open Range, Tombstone, Unforgiven, True Grit (Coen version), Deadwood.

The Wild Bunch is probably the oldest I really liked.

Not a fan at all of the old John Wayne ones. I watched The Searchers, which I thought was a good story, but the acting (not John himself, but some of the others) was so over the top. Like high school drama club stuff.

Do you like the Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Lone Ranger, etc. type of westerns?

No, I don't think so. I don't believe I've actually seen a Roy Rogers or Gene Autry movie, but I've seen some old Lone Ranger episodes. But I'm not generally a fan of movies from that era. Even the Clint "spaghetti westerns" I find kind of a chore to get through, though they all have good parts.

I enjoy good Westerns - old or more recent. Many of my favourite films would be Westerns. Don't like the cornball ones, however and I find it a lot easier to enjoy a low budget bad film noir than I do watching a similar type of Western.

Among my favourites are (at least):

    01. My Darling Clementine
    02. The Naked Spur
    03. The Searchers
    04. Rio Bravo
    05. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
    06. The Ox-Bow Incident
    07. McCabe and Mrs Miller
    08. Tell Them Willie Boy is Here
    09. Stagecoach
    10. Unforgiven
    11. The Outlaw Josey Wales
    12. One Upon a Time in the West
    13. The Wild Bunch
    14. Ride the High Country
    15. The Shootist
    16. Little Big Man
    17. True Grit (according to The Coens)
    18. Dances with Wolves
    19. Broken Arrow
    20. Bad Day at Black Rock
    21. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
    22. The Man from Laramie
    23. 3:10 to Yuma (the original)
    24. Jeremiah Johnson
    25. Hombre
    26. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
    27. Fort Apache
    28. Warlock
    29. The Last of the Mohicans (Mann)
    30. The Assassination of Jesse James etc
    31. Treasure of the Sierra Madre
    32. Red River
    33. Shane
    34. High Noon
    35. A Man Alone
    36. Will Penny
    37. Monte Walsh (the original)
    38. Black Robe
    39. The Magnificent Seven
    40. The Revenant
    41. Silverado
    42. The Gunfighter
    42. Posse (the Kirk Douglas one)
    43. One-Eyed Jacks
    44. Lonely Are the Brave
    45. Wyatt Earp (Kasdan)
    46. Hour of the Gun
    47. Bad Company
    48. The Ballad of Cable Hogue
    49. Ride Lonesome
    50. The Tin Star

That's enough to be going on with...

And in answer to the question: no, I don't think they do generally. When I was a kid, there were still plenty of television Westerns, we had cowboy and Indian toys and whatever side you picked, there was a certain romance attached to it. Sci-Fi took over, then horror, action and now superhero movies. I don't think kids care much about film noir either. I teach film, and, to be honest, many of them don't care much about any kind of film that requires a bit of thought, let alone one made before 2000, and it's an uphill struggle to find something they can connect to within the limits set by the exam board. They pick the subject because they think they're going to spend a couple of years sitting on the backsides watching the kind of thing they watch at home. Several are, inevitably, disappointed.

You may like the Howard Hawk western then. He had a very naturalistic style and people talk and act more normally, like the dialogue is like real people talking rather than one actor reading his lines then another.
