I have the Anthology that is s 2 CD set (the same tracks as Gold). Based on what I read before I bought it, it has better mastering than the original Chess box set. It sounds fine to these ears. I thought the box set was more muffled sounding.

I believe I first heard Tulane on an obscure European CD compilation called Let It Rock (one of many with that title!).

I recall the brief sleeve notes talked around the notion that one could throw darts at a wall of Chuck Berry songs and come away with a great compilation, and the focus of the CD was a little more on lesser known tunes.

It didn't delve super deep into that concept but I do recall it having songs like Route 66.

Anyway, Tulane was an instant favourite and would work really well to bookend a single disc compilation, especially with the Johnny B. Goode, Bye Bye Johnny, story thread running through a lineup.

From his 70s output I don't find much compelling material, though I've always enjoyed his take on Shake, Rattle and Roll.

Chuck seems to have liked the song Bio from his later years and he played it quite often in concert.

Just change the name to "The Great 280"

Then. picking the tracks would become much easier.

I have room for a few more songs on both discs.
Some of the ones I'm thinking about adding are...

    Anthony Boy
    I Wanna Be Your Driver
    Drifting Heart
    Guitar Boogie
    Down The Road A Piece
    Confessin' The Blues
    Too Pooped to Pop
    Go Go Go
    House Of Blue Lights
    Little Marie
    Dear Dad

I would like to make it an even 50 (25 per disc).
Also need to put the new songs in chronological order.

If you chose regular length songs, you can fit approximately 60 songs on 2 discs.

I still enjoy this collection, 28 tracks is a lot for a CD back in the day

There are still some I would include that are not on your list. Route 66, Don't Lie To Me, Our Little Rendezvous, Tulane, Bio etc... I was able to fit 60 tracks on my 2 cdr set.

I'm pretty sure you can add 4-6 more tracks per CD, Darryl, as my single-disc comp had 31. Right now you're around 67-68 minutes on the first disc and 59-60 on the second, so I'd say you can add about 4 tracks on the first and 6 on the second.

Assuming the timings are correct, I came up with 67:40 for disc 1 and 60:05 for disc 2. You can fit approximately 80 minutes on a cdr.

Absolutely won't sound better than existing releases, most likely will be inferior.

That's an out-of-copyright release, copies of previously released material, mastered from the previous releases.

Bite your tongue! "Oh Baby Doll" is essential and a first-rate Berry track.... listen to that driving guitar throughout, and the upbeat drums... dare i say it was the first punk record? Well I just said it. :) Surprised someone like Green Day never covered it. Agree with everyone that "You Never Can Tell" should be on any Chuck comp.

The last few songs on each disc will be the most difficult to add.
I've only recently got into CB's music (beyond only knowing a few songs).
Also I may change the title a bit (possibly dropping the reference to the number of songs).

Haven't had chance quite yet to add the final few tracks. Will make a list of a potential few. Then I will narrow it down to what will fit.

Tulane is one of the tracks I'm considering.
