Yeah, it's a very nondescript guitar part, could be anyone. Very unfunky! Apparently John McDermott says it's Jimi though.
Must check out the Hallyday version of Hey Joe, thanks.

It's the outtake, not the single. The choppy rhythms do sound like Jimi (when you compare to that bedroom "Hound Dog" that was caught on film).

I always bow to those who know best but I also keep an open mind, especially when there is more than a slight doubt.

Alas, if the session was there, he doesn't remember it. He did say he didn't think A-1 Sound had a stereo machine at the time, so if it was recorded there, presumably the stereo mix was either made later or elsewhere. Was it first released on the See-Saw LP in 1966?

I asked this earlier, but no one replied:

So, since this thread dates back to 2008:

Is the Razor & Tie Don Covay CD still the one to get for the best overview?

It's the only one I've encountered that has both the Atlantic hits and some of the later ones. (And a few of the early singles as well.) I haven't played the CD for awhile but I remember it being very well done.

According to the liner notes of "West Coast Seattle Boy", "Mercy, Mercy" was recorded in March of 1964 and released as a single in August of 1964 on Rosemart Records (distributed by Atlantic). They've got a small photo of the 45 in the liner notes.

I was specifically talking about the stereo mix.

    Thank you!

  11. I see that 'Mercy, Mercy' is on the LP Mercy! (from 1965) and See-Saw (1966) - is it the same recording, or is the version on See-Saw a remake?
