That's what I had always thought, but then I thought some folks here were saying that this was not the case.
As I got into the Doors in the early 90s and bought all their albums soon after (except LA Woman as I had the cassette for years before upgrading) I guess that I have the 88 editions (not at home so I can't look). I also have the 97 Box Set. I haven't bought any other versions of the Doors albums since then. As far as vinyl is concerned, I only have Other Voices and Full Circle on vinyl. Am I best to get the original albums or the recent reissues?
I am reading the post as they are different masterings. They are the same?. Which is correct? Do the 2006 "Perception" CDs use the 1999 HDCD Botnick/Grundman masterings from "The Cube"? EAC anyone? See above. We'll get to the bottom of this. The '85 CD has the originally released version. If the info is correct, the 1988 remaster is also the original non-high/non-F chant version. Thanks. I'll add that when I update. Thanks. The Japan 18P2-2690. I am having trouble finding the first Japan release of the other Rothchild/Botnick/Doors remasters. UK imports were released in 1990 and these may be the first release (UK for Japan).

Wow well either way I'm happy the Perception boxset CDs have the original mixes. This would've been easier if the booklet had more information. So my understanding now is the Perception boxset CD main album tracks are the 1999 remasters (Bruce Botnick & Bernie Grundman), but the bonus tracks on the CDs are 2006 remasters (Bruce Botnick). The DVDs are all mixed/mastered by Bruce Botnick. That explains a lot more than just "Surround Sound and Stereo Mastering: Bruce Botnick" haha!

This release features a never-before-heard song, 'She Smells So Nice', which captures the band--organist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, drummer John Densmore and late singer Jim Morrison joyfully barreling through a full-throttle original before segueing into the Blues standard 'Rock Me'. The track was recently discovered by producer Bruce Botnick while reviewing the L.A. Woman session tapes. In addition to 'She Smells So Nice', the second disc includes eight never-before-heard versions of songs offering a fresh view on this landmark album, which was the group s sixth straight Top 10. The studio chatter between the songs is a revelation, transporting listeners to The Doors Workshop: the West Hollywood rehearsal space where they recorded the album with Botnick. One segment in particular captures a fascinating moment of inspiration when Morrison suggests they add the now-iconic thunderstorm sound effects to the beginning of 'Riders On The Storm'. I have a CD of Morrison Hotel with a catalog number of 62434-2E. It has a red Elektra label. Discogs says that this is the 1999 remaster, but I'm not sure.
To confuse matters more....there are some mispressings out there of the 1999 Soft Parade that actually use the previous (1988?) mastering. All of the packaging indicates 1999, the CD even has the red Elektra label like the 1999, but it ain't the 1999. I had one of these.
Thanks Reb. Thanks. Those are the calalogue numbers for the discs in the 1999 "Cube." The catalogue numbers for the single 2001 issues are: The Doors 74007-2 Strange Days 74014-2 Waiting For The Sun 74024-2 The Soft Parade 75005-2 Morrison Hotel 75007-2 L.A. Woman (48:51) 75001-2 Essential Rarities E2 62530 - (P)(C) 1999 - is there also a 740**-2 or 7500*-2 catalogue number for this one? I asked a member for the EAC numbers for his 1988 pressing to compare. This is the info for my copy of "The Soft Parade" - 75005-2 - HDCD Note: it has the "Cube" catalogue number in the matrix (62434-2.4). The 4 would equal the fouth album. The "Cube" has "D" (62434-2D) in its catalogue number. Matrix: 2 62434-2.4 01 M1S8 X9901 EAC: all 98.9%
Ah, okay. The matrix for the 1999 Morrison Hotel is: 2 62434-2.5 03 M1S5 Y9724 (mould SID code: IFPI 2U7H) Here's more that's missing from the list: 1988 The Doors (74007-2) (Matrix: 2 74007-2 SRC+04) The Soft Parade (75005-2) (Matrix: 2 75005-2 SRC+07) L.A. On a slightly unrelated note: does anyone have the promo of Strange Days that was included with The Sunday Times in the UK? This: http://www.discogs.com/Doors-Strange-Days/release/1484960 What does it sound like/which mastering does it use?
Man, that catalogue has been a mess for a long time. I actually don't mind the Cube/Perception remasters - although I hate the revisionist elements on the first album. Still, as much as I hate to say it, I would be intrigued by a properly done set of remastered albums in original mixes (including mono where applicable). And not to derail this too much, but I am still pissed that the LA Woman outtakes got shelved!
Thanks Ringo. The 1999 "The Soft Parade" mastering is the one in question from the set. Mike, do you remember if this was from the 1999 "Cube" or the 2001 single CD release? I wonder if both the box and single issues have the mx up. We'll go with the 1988 mastering as it is the only previous mastering (unless there is a secret mastering kicking around.) The mispressing was from a a standalone disc, not from the cube. They weren't all misspressed, just some.
I picked up 2012 CDs of The Soft Parade and Morrison Hotel yesterday. The back insert for The Soft Parade mentions the 40th anniversary remixes, but the back insert for Morrison Hotel doesn't. I am traveling, so I haven't listened to them yet. Hopefully I will get to listen to them in a few days.
