Overheard in a major UK record store in the late 1980s, some years before the advent of CD-Rs, being said by someone annoying a bored store employee.

"I own a multi-channel synthesiser, which means I can make my own CDs".

I've no idea as to what this customer was on about to this day.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet, but I have heard:
"Why are they called 12" records?"
"Paul McCarthy... he was in the Beatles, right?"
"Do you have anything by... uh... L.F.A.M.O.?"

In the wake of David Bowie's death, I hunted for a copy of Blackstar. HMV was sold out, which was understandable. The next store I checked didn't have any either, and when I asked a sales associate, his response was "Are you sure it's been released yet?"

It always irritates me when I have a similar conversation with people who don't share my love of older music. "You like the Beatles? Aren't they half dead?"

As if being dead automatically makes your recording output no longer valid.

I wouldn't be listening to much music if I only listened to people who were still alive.

I don't think you have to be an audio engineering student or from the '60s generation to know the difference. I'm 29 and when I was a teenager learned the difference when I was researching the Beatles' music. I don't expect most millennials to know the difference between mono and stereo, but are people who will be curious enough to find out for themselves.

Probably because "Lindsey" is traditionally a female's name, and "Stevie" is traditionally a male's name. You're going to get that kind of reaction when people meet with something unconventional.

That's because you were into that stuff. Most people aren't.

I remember back in 1990, Michael Musto reviewed the then-new Hitsville USA boxed set in People magazine. In his review, he wrote that they "remixed the songs into new stereo". It annoyed me to the point that I fired off a letter to him explaining the difference. The point is that, while people love music, they don't know, or even care a bit about the technological side. Witness the protest that pops up on this very forum from time to time about this.

I'm a 30 y.o music nerd who has been listening to/ buying records for about a decade, and to be honest, I recently had to Google what mono was.

My comment comes from an employee,

Customer (me), returning a defective LP, "This brand new record is nothing but crackles and pops" (Nick Lowe, Pure Pop For N ow People)
17 yr old cashier, smirking, "well, your needle obviously is broke:rolleyes:"

Possible. But trust me, EVERY generation of females has tricks to meet and get to know men.

  24. Not a dumb comment at all. I don't buy used anymore as I like my LP's to sound quiet in the background and for the music to be clear and crisp, not mushy, distorted and full of loud crackle, snaps and pops. Whoever said that made a valid point. It is very rare to find pristine old vinyl these days. I've certainly given up that futile exercise. It's new vinyl or (mainly) CD these days. I've spent tons of money trying to prove the argument the opposite way and there just comes a point where you are defeated.

  25. Second-hand record dealer to a lady who walks in her shop and wants to dump a load of Gilbert & Sullivan mint LP's with her:

"I don't know anyone who would buy that so I'm sorry I can't take it". Then later in the conversation "Yes, old records are what people want, especially the youngsters. The new records have no character and they don't always know how to make them right these days. People want the crackle and pop and character of vintage vinyl".
