fmfxray373 Capitol LPs in the 70s were pretty good.

Yeah if you read it does sounds like a description of tedium......however when he sings it you somehow get the opposite feeling....I think he is saying the ride was short but incredibly intense...it is like Dylan makes an emotional point by singing the exact opposite of what he feels....that is why he is so great.

I had this on tape in 83 or 85. I remembered liking it then but it didn't knock my early teen socks off. I'm listening to the CD I recently purchased and I am REALLY enjoying this album. It's a pretty rocking album and the ballads aren't too shabby. I too am a fan of "Lenny Bruce".

I need to pick this up on vinyl.

I used to overvalue this back when I was on a Dylan kick where every album he did seemed like a 'good' album.

Every Grain of Sand is an excellent song, the outtake Angelina is a fine song, the B-side that was added on after-the-fact (The Groom's Still Waiting at the Altar) is fine as well, but that's it. The rest is junk. A few are tolerable, even pleasant, but a lot of it's just horrid. I don't think Caribbean Wind would've saved this LP either. It could've been a great song, but they made a hash of it in the studio.

I find the title track, Heart of Mine (sloppy as it is, it's fun) and In The Summertime good tunes as well. Plus had Bob used the outtakes he could've really had a great album.

Those were 3 of the more tolerable numbers for me. I don't think they're that good, but they aren't terrible.

Its a grower. But the sound to me is dire. Glad Dylan started listening to some producers that made him take some time with the engineering and production of his albums later on.

The songs are a mixed bag, IMO, but the vocals? Bob absolutely sings the you-know-what out of much of this album.

I think Dylan probably recorded Knocked Out Loaded just so that his fans would no longer have to argue about what his worst sanctioned studio album was.

There is a lot. And the outtakes are't much better in this case.

The sound is good to me. Summertime is one of his better recorded tunes, and a very good tune, too. Listen to it on vinyl. The soundstage is huge.

I thought that Dylan already did that with Self-Portrait. Did he have to do it again? ;) Arnie

    any takers on that comment?

I for one love the album more as represented in my playlist with "Angelina" "and "Caribbean Wind" added ...

Bob always says daft stuff. He called "Love & Theft" a "Greatset hits set - without any hits". SoL was ok but could have been far better with Angelina, Caribbean Wind amongst other left offs.

It's very uneven. It contains one of his very best songs, "Every Grain of Sand".
The rest of Side B Dead Man, Dead Man, In the Summertime and Trouble feels like turgid filer.
I always liked Side A: title track, Lenny Bruce, Heart of Mine, Watered-Down Love and The Groom's... but they are perhaps not premier league Dylan.

I know it's not his best but it's my most played Dylan album. Make of that what you will.

I'm not a fan, but "Every Grain of Sand" and "The Groom's Still Waiting at the Altar" are on my all time Dylan comp.

And it's his only album that was changed when issued in CD ( groom still waiting at the altar was added)

Actually I think it was the title track Dylan named his best. I would not way that but it s a great track nevertheless. I find the whole album great as well. In the summertime is lovely and Every Grain of sand is one of Dylan's true masterpieces. One of those songs that sort of explains why he is a worthy winner of the Nobelorize in literature
All in all a very good Dylan album
