Newbie to tube amp question - can I plug directly into this unit with my turntable? Or do I need a pre-amp? Thanks

 

You need a phono premap -then from that into the line level inputs. Line level accept everything - like CD players, Tape - etc - phono needs to be brought up to Line and a few more things (that the phono pre does.)

 

The new ST70 has two volume controls on front - one for each channel.

Thanks for your help. I have a vintage sony str 6800 receiver, can that be incorporated. Or do I need new gear? How much does a decent phono preamp and line level go for?

You can get a very nice phono pre for a couple hundred bucks - and of course you can spend much more.

 

It also looks like you might be able to use your Sony as a preamp - and then use the Dynaco as a dedicated amplifier - I think that is what is meant by the ext outputs and ext button. And if you are happy with the Sony and it has a phono - then that is enough for now.

I think you are fine with your Sony - use that as a pre-amp - and the Dynaco as the amp. If you have a CD player - you can try that through both the Sony and the Dynaco to see/compare what you like best- my bet would be the new Dynaco as the Sony is fairly old and I'm assuming it hasn't been rebuilt. Typically those old 70s receivers can get really noisy and flat/boring in the soundstage dept - until they are refreshed and gone through by a tech.

I emailed Dynaco and asked if the ST-70 can be used directly with a CD player. Here is the response I received:

Thank you for your interest in Dynaco. While you can connect a CD player directly to the ST-70 without a preamplifier you may find it hard to set your levels for appropriate listening comfort. You can absolutely try it to see if it works for you before investing in a preamp.

Been procrastinating, but went ahead and ordered one today. I have a lot of NOS EL34 tubes I’ve stocked up on for my guitar amps, so it should be interesting rolling output tubes. Looking forward to it!

 

Ending up having buyers remorse and cancelling my order
