This is one of my favorite Eagles tracks. I've always liked their harder rocking side with songs like this one and "Victim of Love".

To me, "Those Shoes" sounds very ahead of its time musically. I think a lot of it has to do with the bassline and the overall dark, moody atmosphere. Or maybe it's because, musically, it isn't something you'd expect from the group.

On a related note, the riff on Tool's "Sober" sounds very similar to the one on "Those Shoes".

always thought the same thing, it just happens to be a track buried in the middle of an album that's never gotten a lot of plays from me.

had the eagles rallied and tried to embrace a path forward instead of throwing in the towel, this direction might've served them well.

and yeah, always used to joke that tool were OBVIOUSLY eagles fans.

I love this song. It reminds me of a former female co-worker and her red high heels...

"Those Shoes" and "Victim of Love" both had substantial input musically from Don Felder. It's only a matter of time before a certain someone enters the thread to squelch any credit that Felder deserves.

That said, it's one of the more solid tracks from The Long Run. Ahead of its time? Not really. Has a bit of Steely Dan going on.

Agreed - one their best yet least known tracks. I have to admit, it wasn't until a few years back that I "discovered" this song. It's finding nuggets like this that helped me form the behavior of listening to albums and not just songs. Good stuff :)

I like it. These boys could rock when they wanted.

In terms of sounding 'ahead of it's time' I remember at the time being struck by how precise and 'drum machine' like the drum patterns were. Especially for a band like them in '79. Very metronomic though I do believe they were real.

I agree the writing input of Don Felder is noticeable in "Those Shoes", "Victim of Love" as well as "Hotel California." I don’t hear much similarity to Steely Dan , no maj7th chords or mu chords - unless you mean using the voice box/guitar as a counterpoint – as was done in Steely Dan’s Hatian Divorce?

the only good thing about this song is the beastie boys song it lead to.

The use of a "talk box" puts the song's production squarely in 1980.

Although I have always felt the song was a little out of place on that album. Good song though.

One of the most generic and least Eagles sounding things they ever did. Could have been any number of bands from that era, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Foghat etc. Don't hear anything remotely groundbreaking about it.

These 2 make my eagles playlist along with TEENAGE JAIL, DISCO STRANGLER, IN THE CITY. The Long Run is probably my favorite Eagles album.

Hmm when I hear "talk box" the first artists I think of are Peter Frampton, Stillwater and other mid-70s groups. I actually thought it was sorta out of fashion by 1980?

Walsh was using it in '73, Jeff Beck was also using it in '72.

The Long Run is the perfect Eagles album for people who hate the Eagles.

I like the early country flavored stuff by them as well. I just think The Long Run, while a change in direction is still a great album with some eclectic material that's very much a product of it's time.
