John RT Davies has been mentioned in this thread. On the cover of VJAZZ 62 (pdf link below) is a photo of him with Eric J Brown in his studio ("barn"), 1 Walnut Tree Cottage, Burnham, Bucks, England in early 1970. http://www.ajm.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/VJAZZ62.pdf
I hope you guys don't mind a bit a self promotion, but besides being a record collector and audiophile, I also happen to play drums with Vince Giordano's Nighthawks. For those that don't know, this is a NYC based band that specializes in recreating the jazz of the 1920s and 30s. Very few people in the world know more about this music than Vince, and he's dedicated his life to preserving and performing it. If you're ever in New York, stop by our regular gig to hear us play a lot of the music discussed in this thread! Vince Giordano
I have this disc and think it sounds quite nice. Here's an article about some tracks mastered by Nick Dellow from Euro metal "mothers" They sound amazing. Crystal Clear Louis Armstrong Recordings Surface
@Scope J This is an excellent sounding 3 CD collection too. This version is a Euro set of the out of print U.S. GRP set. Duke Ellington - The Complete Brunswick And Vocalion Recordings 1926 - 1931
Yep, same thing. Same mastering, etc. The MCA/GRP version is out of print, but Verve released it in Europe, and you can still get new copies. Personally, I like the art deco style cover of the Verve edition. The booklet is great as well.
Here are a few more titles that I have which are all pretty excellent transfers. Louis Armstrong - The Big Band Sides 1930/32 Bix Beiderbecke, Frankie Trumbauer - Bix & Tram FLETCHER HENDERSON & HIS ORCHESTRA - "Do That Thing" Frog Records: Jazz/Blues music
...and three more. The Wolverines disc is superb, one of my prizes. Sadly, I believe it's out of print. If you see it, pick it up you won't be disappointed! Clarence Williams - Dreaming The Hours Away. Clarence Williams: The Columbia Recordings: Volume 1 Clarence Williams - Senegalese Stomp The Wolverines Featuring Bix Beiderbecke And Jimmy McPartland - The Complete Wolverines 1924-1928
Done by Doug Benson, the same engineer who did The Wolverines set I posted above. Excellent. The Staff- Doug Benson: Audio Restoration in Maryland He's done a good amount of work for Archeophone. Doug Benson (2)
Still looking for some McKinney's Cotton Pickers, Jerry? Try these two comps on the Frog label. McKinney's Cotton Pickers - "Put It There" (Volume 1 - 1928-29) McKinney's Cotton Pickers - Cotton Picker's Scat Volume 2 - 1930
I found the Timeless Tiny Parham set at a record store, enjoying it now... his 1928-1930 Victor series, rich music, well-recorded, with an amazing number of originals. In fact, Parham has sole writing credit for the entire series(!), except Down Yonder (unknown) and Squeeze Me (Waller-Williams), both unreleased at the time. These alternates are absent from the set, but available elsewhere: Voodoo (Take 1) That Kind Of Love (Take 1) My Dreams (Take 1) - Stop and Listen! (Frog) Back To The Jungle (Take 1) - Frog Spawn: The Fourth Batch (Frog) After All I've Done For You (Take 1) - Tiny Parham (Neatwork)
The 3-CD set mentioned in posts 185-187 is excellent... The Jungle Band was the group's actual pseudonym on Brunswick.
