I just received a $38 vinyl of The Howlin Wolf. While the music is phenomenal sound quality is extremely poor. I am guessing that I would have received the same sound out of a CD for much less of a price. Is there a rule of thumb that you use when trying to choose a CD versus final. I always prefer vinyl but I also play CDs from my collection.

richierichie My glass is always full.

I ain't no audiophile, so I go off what my ears tell me but that can only happen once you buy that crap sounding LP. What I do is the obvious thing, look up reviews on the net, radio or even speciality magazines. You can even, after checking for comparable threads, ask the good folk on here.

No real rules, just time and experience.

That’s not helpful, but it’s true.

When they are both well done, the difference between cd and lp should not be that large. And neither format is a magic cure all for a poor recording. Do you have reason to believe the album should sound better? Do you know the cd doesn't sound worse? I'm not familiar with this particular recording,

Research before purchasing, i only buy the vinyl version if.

    1. The music lends itself to the format. E.g sitting in one spot listening to an entire album front to back.
I prefer to listen to metal and hard rock in the car so CD for me for certain genre's, Metal doesn't go down well with the wife etc at home.

    2. The vinyl version/mastering is superior to the CD press.
If it's not, im happy paying way less and getting the CD.

Ultimately i want the best sounding version of the album i can get, be it CD or Vinyl i don't care.

    You're in the right place.

    Research!!!!
