Just thought it should be noted that this great song by a great band was written and recorded in late part of 1965. The Byrds were certainly inventive...was there anything like this in pop released at this time? I think not.

And I think I hear backwards guitar in between those verses, I can't tell what that would be if not backwards guitar. I dunno, maybe more innovative than the Beatles? Pretty good for a bunch of folkies.

The Columbia version was recorded in December of '65, the 45 was recorded in January of '66.

Pretty trippy for 1965. "Sunshine Superman" was also recorded in 1965

The Yardbirds were recording 'Shapes Of Things' at the same time - December 1965 and January 1966.

Do others think there is backwards guitar between the 1 and 2nd verses?

I don't know what could be considered psychedelic on the Rubber Soul album, "Norwegian Wood" maybe? Still, it's a stretch.

The first couple of minutes so not much different than the original, then I saw that goes on for another 17 minutes...sorry, can't do it. By the way and Roger McGuinn solo just on acoustic guitar is really, really good also

Yeah, it was a pretty inventive piece of work circa 1965. Great track.

The closest would be an unreleased version of Norwegian Wood with heavy sitar.

Besides the Never Before comp, is there an LP that has the RCA 8MH on it?

A great song that that has nothing to do with a drug high. Or so the Byrds have said.

  20. 'Eight Miles High' is one of those songs that I wish was 9 or 10 minutes long.

So, which one do people like better; the December 1965 RCA recording or the January 1966 Columbia recording?

I like them both. The Columbia recording is more polished and incredible in its own way, but there is something I like more about the raw and dynamic RCA version.

Grant Life is a rock, but the radio rolled me!

I guess Mitch Miller left the label right before the Byrds recorded it. Miller HATED rock & roll/rock and soul music.

The Word is the psychedelic song on Rubber Soul - not the music per se but the lyrics.

Most people are going to prefer the Columbia version, though some, Crosby included, like the RCA one better.
