I just done a search on 'elo' and read one thread where some guy was defending this piece of junk. But do I have the same version? Mine is a USA disc under Epic/Legacy 2001 Sony, but there is no mention of Peter Mew. It sounds like a 'Mewtilation' job though. Similar sound to that Al Stewart Year of the Cat remaster...very unnatural sounding.
What other choices do I have? Is vinyl the best route?
    Thanks.

Not to toot my own horn, but I think this is the best version ever. Right from the British tapes, tube playback....

    Great album.

Go ahead and toot Steve. You did a terrific job on Eldorado.

    Love this album too.

Blast those chops, Steve. The Legacy release doesn't hold a candle to yours. :D

This is an amazing CD and a must have for any ELO fan.

On the other hand the rest of the catalogue sounds even worse after you hear this and you realize the potential that was lost with other versions and other ELO albums.

Maybe the best route is vinyl for all the catalogue except Eldorado? Maybe those vinyl junkies have something there! :D

    Now hold on there Gary!

Eldorado done by Steve is the one all others are compared against as Steve's is the definative version period. However, the other ELO albums are sreaming for his mastering, but the Mastersound Gold cd's of Face The Music and Discovery aren't exactly crap other than being alittle bit too bright. I don't remember how the vinyl of those 2 sounds. How is the vinyl of those 2 albums anyway? Where's Tom when you need him?:D

    Reading from the liner notes:

The 2001 Epic/Legacy release was mastered by Joseph M Palmaccio, which is odd because the Flashback box released around the same time was mastered by Doug Sax and Robert Hadley.

Both sets however say they are produced by Jeff Lynne and Al Quaglieri.

I just saw Steve's Eldorado somewhere for $45 on the web, and IMHO it is easily worth that amount if you even slightly like ELO.

I'm not sure what body part I'd be willing to sell to have Steve take a whack at Face The Music, New World Record, and Out of the Blue.

Well I'd be willing to throw in a finger or two, but Discovery would have to be in there too, love that album.;)

The Eldorado DCC is unsurpassed....a thing of sonic beauty...

"On The Third Day" on vinyl ain't too shabby - lots of boom, boom and Jeff's voice sounds much better than on the CD...

"Face The Music" is a pretty darn good Msatersound effort...pales to "Eldorado" but ya' gotta take content into consideration - a strong effort, but not their best...

Sorry, Dave - "Discovery" descended into the too-sweet pap that marked the beginning of the end of ELO...at least for me...

    Good weekend to all!

Sorry, just can't agree. Discovery was the album that really turned me on to ELO and it was probably their most popular album, sales wise. After that I got turned on to all their previous work.

Thank's for the info. It seems this particular DCC is rare.
My favourites are Eldorado, Out of the Blue, Face the Music and A new World Record.

Snowman, you got my ELO faves right on target, but I am a fan of Discovery as well there, Dave. Tracks like "Last Train to London", "Midnight Blue", "On the Run", "Wishing" well, hell I guess I'd have to say Side 2 is just solid songwriting through and through, some of Jeff's finest work that happens to be on the album where they were trying to sound a little disco-ey ("Shine A Little Love"). Also, "I Need Your Love" is a great tune and "Don't Bring Me Down" is a certified classic. Did any of you catch Jeff's VH-1 show ("Storytellers") last year when he was performing tunes from "Zoom"? That was a really nice performance, although Zoom didn't really take off like Jeff and fans hoped it would, despite being a very good comeback effort.

Dave, you wisely proceeded in the correct direction!

As an old Move fan I was with ELO from the start and was lucky enough to see them in Sydney around the time of On The Third Day. The hall was half empty but ELO were great.

Some might say the beginning of the end was when Roy Wood (one of the true musical geniuses of 60s pop) left, but of course that's a little (actually a lot) unfair on Jeff Lynne. I began losing interest after A New World Record.

Would love to see a Hoffmanized ELO II.

I've got a vinyl copy from Germany on the Harvest label that's a killer tho.

I saw ELO at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in NYC around the time of ON THE THIRD DAY. They were terrific. BTW, the opening act was Steely Dan, who put on a good show despite sound problems.

I got into ELO with the "Hold On Tight" and "Twilight" singles, and my first album by them and still my favorite (and I don't care what anyone else thinks :o ) is "Secret Messages"!! Give it up for "Secret Messages"!! There's got to be other fans of this album somewhere....

    hello??

There was a time when I was such a big ELO fan that I was buying up Roy Wood stuff too, I don't remember a single title I bought, but I remember being surprised by how much I liked it at the time. Seems like I bought his stuff on used UA 8-tracks, which may account for my inability to remember much. Any suggestions for Roy Wood CDs, Peter?

YES YES! Exotic Mixture 2 CD compilation on Repertoire. It's still findable if you persevere. Try the online UK stores like HMV and Amazon.

When you get it, throw away disc 2.

Of course if you haven't already done so buy the 3CD Move box set Movements as well, but be prepared for average sound quality. Short of a remix I don't think The Move will sound any better though.

Well, I really like Secret Messages too, even though I'm from the earlier period of their work. My faves are Face the Music & Out of the Blue...Secret Messages is definitely underrated!
