We should also remember that John Lennon had no issues with being associated with him at the height of his 1974 heyday.

David Furnish took over the business side of Elton in 2015 and quickly made some enemies.

This has the potential to be really great.
I am just a bit surprised however that
Lady Gaga isn't one of the first TBA.
Glad to see John Legend is on board!
Afaic, Lady and the Legend can carry all
    the rest.

Nope. He's still standing as evidenced by the title of the special.

Its more like a plug for these artists than for Elton, in a way, it seems.

That's funny. You know, I said to myself, "who is that bald old guy sitting next to Elton?" at the start of the show. I thought maybe it was Ray Cooper. It took at least 20 minutes and some of the comments from the guests for me to figure out it was Bernie! Yikes.

OK, up to now the performers have been quite good. But Keisha's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" was a train-wreck. :shake:

Elton's band sounds fantastic as (normal).

Sunday ... on the Country awards show. I'm not the biggest Reba fan, but I would have preferred her over Keisha, that's for sure.

John Legend and Miranda Lambert were good, everyone else is noticebly less musical.

Overall, it was fairly dreadful... typical LA schmaltz... and some of those "new" artists just plain can't sing.

I thought Chris Martin was really good... and John Legend as well.
Lady Gaga has a strong voice... but her delivery was tres cheesy.
The less said about the spoken word versions of 'Border Song' and 'Someone Saved My Life Tonight', the better.

I also didn't mind Miranda Lambert... her straight country take on 'My Father's Gun' was quite alright.
Although... did anyone else think it was kind of strange that those lyrics made it past the network censors?
It's a great, great song... in it's context on the album... but it's point of view is the musical equivalent of a Confederate statue.

Without getting into the politics, I imagine that since it's a song by a UK songwriter people figure (rightly IMHO) that the historical background is just nostalgic backdrop rather than any serious comment.

I caught the end of this show: thought it was weak really. Legend's vocals are a bit lightweight to set against George Michael in the same material and Elton's choice of his own songs (“Benny and the Jets”, “Philadelphia Freedom”, “I'm Still Standing”) was shallow.

Caught the beginning of Miley Cyrus' version of Bxxch is back. It took 30 seconds for me to move on. Horrid. Never tuned back in.

No not at all. Why should it be censored? It's a fictional story set during the Civil War that is from the perspective of a Southern family caught up conflict. It recognizes the feelings and loyalty felt by a son who just lost his father in the war, but it is not especially sympathetic to the Confederate cause. Nor does it glorify the South. It's a quiet, reflective song that could be taken any number of ways.

I agree completely... I only brought it up because you expect people to be so over-the-top touchy about such things these days.

As a non-American myself, I learned nearly everything I know about the Civil War from 'Tumbleweed Connection'.
Having that opposing point of view was a refreshing change from movies and TV etc.

    Pretty bad except...
Props to Chris Martin for trying "We All Fall In Love Sometimes", not one of Elton's more famous songs. It ended up sounding fairly bland, but A for effort.
Lady Gaga nailed "Your Song" full stop.
And John Legend, in my opinion, had the performance of the night with "Sun". I'm not a Legend fan, but he brought it.
And the man himself sounded in fine form, especially on "Bennie & The Jets". So great to see Nigel and Davey still around and sounding good.
