I did get madman and captain fantastic reissues and love them Sorry, don't mean to hijack the thread but have been trying to find a good vinyl copy of GBYBR for a while with no luck. I am not a big enough fan to spend the money on the Speakers Corner, what would be a good pressing to seek out that's a little more affordable but still good? If there is a better option digital I am open to that as well
Elton John Reissues The reissue dates are: ★ Tumbleweed Connection (30 June) ★ Honky Château (7 July) ★ Caribou (21 July) ★ Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player (21 July) ★ Rock Of The Westies (25 August) ★ The Big Picture [2LP] (25 August) ★ Blue Moves [2LP] (22 September) ★ Empty Sky (22 September) ★ One Night Only – The Greatest Hits [2LP] (20 October) ★ Sleeping With The Past (20 October)
It's weird that they went to the trouble of making textured covers for Madman and HC, but then didn't bother with Tumbleweed.
Just got it last night. It is not. Only on the Burberry deluxe edition is it textured. The pink and white lyrics in the gatefold are the same though.
Yes, the picture of Elton is textured on the UNI original, but not the rest of the cover. I bought mine in the summer of '72 in Harvard Square, Cambridge, Mass. Still in NM condition. The actual cover on the DJM is textured.
This is exactly how my DJM looks. The original UNI cover only has the textured picture with a smooth surface on the rest of the cover!
I got the 2014 GBYBR earlier this week from Amazon UK after much deliberation given some of the heat it's had on this site. Sounds great to me, albeit I only have CD releases to compare it to.
Received my copies of Tumbleweed Connection and Honky Chateau today and listened to them in full today. As others have said here, I was disappointed with the poor quality of the covers. It seems that they went on the cheap here. (The are stamped in the back Made in the Czech Republic) Based on the Madman Across the Water release I figured that they would be going for the authentic quality releases. My Shm-CDs of these LPs have the authentic quality covers. Sound-wise the lps are both of the quality you would expect from a Bob Ludwig mastering. However, I found the pressing of the Tumbleweed Connection vinyl to be inferior to Honky Chateau. The vinyl of Honky Chateau was extremely quiet while Tumbleweed Connection was not so quiet. (Problems with the plates in the production?)
I don't think the covers are poor quality at all however they are not exact replicas. I personally love that they didn't recreate the Honkey Chateau tuck-fold package. It was always a pain to get the record out. In terms of pressings, My Tumbleweed seems par with Honky.
I don't think there was anything wrong with any EJ album/LP until after 1976. Its been downhill since then.
This. In addition to this album, there are numerous others with inventive sleeve gimmicks that were very cool from a creative standpoint, but not super practical.
Maybe I'll try it....I have tried 3 different used older pressings. The only one that sounded good was just too damn noisy.
It sounds as though the latest releases are not getting the rave reviews of the first batch so far. Wonder if it's the pressing plant? And the covers on the first batch were absolutely top notch. Maybe not on these.
Sorry, never mind. I understand what you mean. My mistake. Yes, it's just the front pic of EJ that's textured.
