You should have bought the 2017 reissue (or 2016, I'm not sure). As from now on, every album is getting reissued AGAIN but with diminished artwork. (I just checked the 2018 Captain Fantastic: no poster and only one of the two booklets anymore. (The 2017 release had it all). I really don't understand why they are doing such a thing. Because there are still stocks of the 2017 issues, but they are being replaced by those "new and downgraded" ones.
Pretty sure they will eventually replace all the titles gradually. If no, why did they have to do only "Captain" and "Madman" in the first place ? What was wrong with these two titles in their 2016/2017 form ?
Just my two cents on the packaging changes: The deluxe gatefolds with extras are more expensive to produce. Look at them as bonuses for buying early. I guarantee you the list price on the Elton catalogue will now drop to around $16-$17 across the board within the year. MCA did exactly the same with later reissues of these albums back in the day....
Yup - they always simplified the packaging as years went by. Even the later albums - I remember Too Low For Zero eventually lost the cool die-cut cover; they just printed the 'see through' rainbow swipes to represent the die-cut effect.
At today's prices and the relatively specialised market there is no need to be repeating the cost cutting on covers as well as diminishing mastering quality of the 80s. People want a faithful reproduction of these titles as well as great sound, which is worth paying a few pounds extra for.
Just received my 2016 EU copy of Captain Fantastic...sounds great, and the Lyrics, Scraps, and Poster are beautiful additions to this release.
In addition to adding some comments on the recent pages of this thread, I’ve also begun reading it from the beginning. I’m sure I’ll get to this info eventually, but just in case I don’t: Are the digital downloads (available outside the US) any good? Do they match the sound of the excellent vinyl, or are they just previous remasters?
It would still be nice if they would consider reissuing several of his other albums on vinyl. I cringe at the thought of an eventual box set like we got with Tom Petty, Queen, Rolling Stones, and others. I think most of us who are fans already have the crucial reissues (his 70s output) and dread the idea of having to buy them again in a box set to get at later releases that are impossible to near impossible to find on vinyl. Think "Wildflowers" by Tom Petty. I don't know, first world problems right?
I was hoping they would do them all. But they skipped many albums and went directly to 2 Low for 0. Let's hope they'll do all of them anyway.
Too Low for Zero was one of the 6 originally chosen by Elton for inclusion in the Burberry box set in 2016 - so that's why that one got picked. Most of the others (except for Sleeping with the Past) never had official vinyl releases, so now virtually all of Elton's studio albums have been available on vinyl somewhere in the world.
Sorry if you guys covered this but is there DJM blue moves and if not what pressing is the best and which one should I buy thanks guys sorry if you already covered this
It was a Rocket Records release, I believe his first, in England. In US, MCA release. I think the Rocket one was pretty good, but honestly the latest 2017 release is better than the Rocket version I had from 1976.
Have you found one yet ? Ive seen it Barnes and Noble so that may be the place to start. It was the '16/'17 version I saw. Of course all stores/stocks are different.
Ya the rocket release is pretty good I would recommend def especially if you can find for about 20 to 25 shipped
I got the 2016 madman across the water today it sounds excellent, I had a us original pressing sounds horrible and then I had an original Euro pressing and it was just beat up played a lot I assume that pressing probably sounds good too but good luck finding a clean copy for about 22 dollars the 2016 pressing is excellent
Ive got a handful of the re-releases and havent had a bad one in the bunch. I do feel bad for the folks wanting these in the future as some have stated the packaging is getting flimsier on the 2018s. Hopefully the sound wont suffer.
Madman and Captain Fantastic have cheaper packaging not faithful to the original. Vinyl might be identical, but I haven't heard so I can't say for sure. Last I checked those are the only two titles that were reissued this year.
The 2016 reissues are excellent and they have all the packing, I would try to find an original DJM press of yellow brick road or the speakers corner reissue Which no one can find lol
Evidently the Captain Fantastic is no longer a gatefold in 2018. Not sure of any audio quality differences as I have the 2016. Try to locate as many 2016/17 releases as possible since changes have started.
Yes the madman for 16 is awesome, I purchased it off of christopher’s recommendation thank you by the way
