I wonder if he'd ever make it on America's Got Talent, The X Factor, The Voice etc?

I beg to differ. I saw this before Elvis' final TV special aired in September.

The fact that I remember it differently might be because I live in New Zealand, not the US of A!

I don't have information for New Zealand airings of these programs, but they were U.S. productions owned by the U.S. stations. They likely leased them out internationally after they aired in North America.

Elvis In Concert aired on CBS October 3, 1977. (Repeated on May 7, 1978)
Memories Of Elvis aired on NBC November 20, 1977. (Repeated on August 29, 1978)

This has nothing to do with how I remember it because I double-checked these dates in the Newspaper Archive and they are indeed correct. By the way, I live in Canada, not the U.S.

Thanks for the reminder. Only playing in my area on Thursday, so planning on going then. Monterey Pop is the same night but I think that's playing another day. (I guess it would be too much to hope Movie Pass had these.)

I am looking forward to seeing what they have done with this. The running time suggests they have created an extended cut.

I started a thread a year ago speculating if they were going to release something to mark this anniversary. In that thread I said my wish is that they present all the different components of the special unedited in a new version so I am hopeful that this is what they have done.

    E. is one of the main artistry pillars those shows are built on.
Great, pure vocals. The Look. Charm. Naturally Entertaining.

Just give him the win and start the next season.

Saw it tonight and some good and bad things.
It doesn't take up the entire screen due to it being originally being made for television I guess.
It's like a big square that does go to the top and bottom of the screen but a decent amount of the remaining left and right side of the screen is just black and blank.
It's like watching a big old school tv.
The other negative is it looks like old film.
It's not digitalized nor is it in video presentation.
Now maybe someone can tell me.
When it first aired was it on film?
I can't remember if my 80s VHS tape was film or video.
The DVD is in video but is that what it looked like originally?
It seems like I always remember it being video.
    The positives now.
It has a mini documentary at the begining with the director and Priscilla which is pretty cool and the close ups of Elvis throughout on film on the big screen gives one and idea or a reminder of how he looked at the movies back in the day.
I felt the sit down jams down work quite as well at the movies and that makes sense because it was made for tv.
But what holds up at the movies and maybe even works better than on the tv or internet are the storyline scenes, gospel segment and the If I Can Dream finale.

  18. Yeah, it was shot for TV in a 4:3 aspect ratio. Very glad they showed it in this format on the big screen, as nothing was cut off from the picture to make it ‘fit’ the movie theater screen. But it was broadcast from the DVD, which has a few video flaws; I had hoped the theater presentation would be from a more recent video mastering so as to fix these.

But still, the chance to see Elvis in a theater was a great experience.

They're showing it two additional times next weekend here locally (I'm in Canada) so I have tickets for August 26. Looking forward to it!

There were a couple stories by the director that were interesting and funny that I had never heard before.

I thought so and that's what I mean about this theatre release.
The sit down segments IMO lose some of the intimacy and magic because it looks like a film or movie.
You don't feel like you're right there with them.
However, the gospel and storyline scenes I think gain a power they never had because they come off like a movie musical.
If I Can Dream holds up either way.
