You've been listening to the wrong bootlegs, I only ever buy soundboard, never audience recordings and most sound fine to me. As for sound comparisons, read the review which should tell you all you need to know (although I'm guessing you're not going to buy it anyway). All this hypothetical talk of when Sony might put this out puzzles me - the fact is they haven't and show no sign of doing so - that's why THIS has been issued.

Please show me where I was being dismissive.

I don't like other people's property being used without permission or credit.

Oddly defensive tone you have about this. Is there a problem?

Like I said in my earlier post, there's not a boot of pro-recorded material (which would be studio or live multi-track) where I've ever been very impressed with the audio, which usually relates to the EQ being off.

Soundboards, well, that's a different story and more case-by-case but even then, I've generally preferred the sound of the official releases.

Regarding the sound on the set you highlighted I ask as you've drawn attention to the release. Do you have it? How does the sound differ on the Texas show compared to the BMG original?

I've read plenty of those reviews, and interacted enough elsewhere in the past to know that how we judge sound comes from two different places. So telling me to just "read the review" doesn't really answer my question.

Yes I received it yesterday and haven't yet had a chance to listen to it. However whatever minor differences there are in the sound between one version or another mean little to me so I avoid spending hours making comparisons. Hence my suggestion that you check the review. For me it is the overall package that appeals which is why I bought it.
And no I don't have a problem, but I do find the negativity odd.

I just checked Amazon UK and the Close Up box with the San Antonio show from 18th April 1972 would appear to have been deleted so prices are a bit high.
Fortunately I bought this set when it came out and it looks like it will remain a must keep for the foreseeable future. Credit to Keith Flynn's site where I checked the date. The listing of recordings from this tour makes a fascinating read.
I am a big fan of all the big rock acts from Dylan, Stones, Who, Led Zep and of course Elvis. I have been buying boots and collecting tapes since I was about 15. I have to say that FTD, BMG and now Sony have done a pretty good (I would actually say excellent) job in releasing archive material.

I revisited Close Up last week for the first time in... golly... two, three years?? Played disc 1: stereo masters and disc 4, the '72 San Antonio show. Great listen. It's been awhile since I've played a '72 show. Such a great period. He still has that swagger and unparalleled power, best exemplified on explosive tracks like Never Been to Spain and You Lost that Loving Feeling. "Well I never been to heaven!" Who else could do that?!

  7. Have you heard any titles by Venus? I've been pleased with the audio of the releases they've put out (for the titles that I've heard).

I've heard snippets, but it's been a while admittedly.

Well I played through the 1976 show from Spirit of Jackson. A fun show. Did Elvis really pay for Felton Jarvis to have a liver/kidney transplant (I forgot which Elvis said he would take back)?
Also I noticed the mastering credit was Jean-Marc Juilland for this disc. I have seen this name on other FTDs. Anyone any knowledge? The show sounded fine to my ears.

Yes, Elvis paid for Jarvis to have a transplant. What separates the Jackson show from nearly every other 1976 era concert is the relative strength of Elvis' vocals; not that his vocals are sublime by any stretch of the imagination, but they are less impaired, thin, and nasally than most of his 1976 concert vocal work. They have more in common with the summer of 1974 than the summer of 1976.

Just another discounted reissue of a BMG era box set via Legacy. The interesting thing is that "Close Up" allegedly was comprised of four individual FTD ideas/releases when FTD was still releasing individual compilations. Even the San Antonio concert being considered as a FTD release is not a stretch circa 2003 considering "On Tour Rehearsals" was issued during that period.

Thanks. I did enjoy the singing on the 76 Jackson. I played disc 2 from the 75 show today and yes it was not a great show/performance.

£50/$70 is a lot for that title, as good as it is. The concert on disc one is from the closing night of the engagement, so it is not a surprise that it is less focused than shows from earlier in the casino engagement, yet it does contain some strong performances. Disc two is a nice addition to the FTD catalogue with additional alternate takes from the February live multitracks and a various early August rehearsals from the Hilton.

God, I didn't realise it's deleted. I buy FTDs in batches of 10/15 from The Elvis Shop.
The last FTD I bought was Elvis At American Sound Studio - about 30 have been released since then.
Are there any others deleted or sold out in that group of 30?
    Thanks.

Above is a list of FTD which if you click on each title will give some info.

Above from Elvis shop London. If a title is more expensive then it is probably deleted/sold out.

I have only 6 FTD soundboards from 1975. So the addiction got stronger and I‘ve ordered „Dixieland Rocks“ and „Elvis in Florida“ after reading some good reviews here...

I have played through "A Date With Elvis" FTD. The Germany home recordings were fine but not the easiest listen. I like the original album but have a fine copy of that in the Complete Albums box so probably will not revisit this FTD that often. Wonder what they will put with "For LP Fans Only"?

The ftd sounds much better than the disc in the Album Collection box.

Thanks I had not noticed. I know the mastering credit is different on the FTD but had wrongly assumed it would be the same as the albums box which I think duplicated the Complete Recording Sessions from a few years back (2007?).

Some inferior sources were used for A Date With Elvis and For LP Fans Only in the Album Collection box.

Finally got "Dinner at Eight" on ebay for a good price. So now I'm done with soundboards from 1975. (Don't know for how long..:D)
