Ok.... it seems that I am making this harder for everyone than I intended.
    My apologies ....
I am just going to run straight Chronological and where there are double ups, there are double ups.....
I just need to insert two Ep's and we're in Chronological order.

So for tonight as I am full of flu and bad manners ... I will leave you with
It's No Secret (what God Can Do) and tomorrow we will look at the other two EP songs.
The version released on the EP and the later to come Christmas album was - take 13 - from January the 19th session at Radio Recorders, Hollywood.
The song was written by Stuart Hamblin in the early fifties and recorded first by Bill Kenny of the Inkspots.
Apparently a young Paul Mccartney adapted the chorus for a Quarrymen song in 1958 called "In Spite Of All The Danger". The bulk of the song having been inspired by the earlier Presley number " Trying to Get To You'.
Here in this song we have Elvis in full Balladeering Gospel mode and the Jordanaires adding suitable vocal accompaniment.

Yeah, chronology is the best way to go. And it makes the most sense to deal with the songs in the medium on which they were first released (be it single, EP, or LP). It can be confusing because sometimes album tracks were later pulled and released as singles or on EPs, and singles and EP tracks were often later collected onto LPs. It is least confusing if you only cover the first release of a track. In other words, if an EP was the first release of tracks (like the gospel EP we're discussing now) you should cover it. But if an EP was just a reissue of tracks that had already appeared on a previous album (like say, the Strictly Elvis EP) it probably does not need to be covered.

In the case of Peace in the Valley, the title song was not released as a single in 1957, but the EP sold well enough that it made the singles chart anyway.

In general I love Elvis' gospel work, but I have to say that the Peace in the Valley EP is the least energetic and least inspiring gospel stuff he ever did. It stands in stark contrast to the gospel tunes on the MDQ session, which are fresh, exciting, and filled with obvious energy, joy, and enthusiasm. On the gospel EP Elvis sounds stiff and overly formal, and the performances are at times overwrought. Fortunately his later gospel recordings would be much, much better.

    I Believe
"I Believe" is a popular song written by Ervin Drake, Irvin Graham, Jimmy Shirl and Al Stillman in 1953.

"I Believe" was commissioned and introduced by Jane Froman on her television show, and became the first hit song ever introduced on TV. Froman, troubled by the uprising of the Korean War in 1952 so soon after World War II, asked Drake, Graham, Shirl and Stillman to compose a song that would offer hope and faith to the populace. In addition to Froman, "I Believe" has been recorded by many others, and has become both a popular and religious standard.

Frankie Laine's version spent eighteen non-consecutive weeks at the top of the UK Singles Chart.[1] Laine also had the most successful version in America, where he reached #2 for three weeks.

Puerto Rican singer, Tito Lara along with Trío Los Hispanos, made a version of this song in Spanish; converting it into a national anthem of faith in Latin America. The Bachelors took the song to the number two spot in the UK in 1964, and Robson & Jerome's version reached number one there in 1995.
    ---------------------------

Although a fairly new song at the time Elvis recorded it, this song had a fairly decorated history as you can see.

    Take My Hand Precious Lord
Another Rev. Thomas A Dorsey song, that has a fairly decorated history in itself. Sung by Mahalia Jackson at the request of Martin Luther King Jnr to inspire those at the civil rights rallies. She also sang it at his funeral by request.

Ok, I've never seen this either, but it doesn't surprise me. Rock 'N' Roll was called "the devil's music" by some at the time. Who knows what else was put out during that time trying to denounce it.

Honestly, this is my favorite ever Elvis magazine cover. They might be saying that the Devil sent him, but they make it look so...cool. It’s the 50’s middle class reaction to rock in one brilliant pulpy tableau.

Peace In The Valley EP - I love the whole thing, and I think it's a serious contender for Elvis' best single/EP. Elvis always sang with conviction and sincerity, but he really shone on the gospel material. There's something magical and transcendent about the Peace In The Valley material, and I think it sort of gets lost in the shuffle on the Christmas album or on compilations. Take those four songs on their own, and you have quite a statement.

(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear - It's slight, but a lot of fun! It's one of the few Elvis tracks where I actually enjoy the Jords' contributions (for the most part, they tend to just get in the way).

Loving You - It's pretty dreary, to be honest. The fast versions are somewhat enjoyable, but otherwise, I always reach for the skip button for this one.

Tomorrow morning (evening, if you're on the other side of the world) we hit the Loving You album. It's a great album, and any input you have about the album and your thoughts and feelings towards it will be greatly appreciated.
So give us the scoop, Betty Boop, share the lowdown, Mr Brown. How do you feel about the first full length movie album in the Elvis catalog?
