Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has announced the Special Edition Blu-ray release of director Denis Sanders' Elvis: That's the Way It Is. The 1970 Elvis Presley documentary has been newly remastered and arrives in premium DigiBook packaging on August 12th.

Sanders' (Shock Treatment) "rockumentary" features the work of Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Lucien Ballard (The Caretakers, The Wild Bunch) and follows the August 1970 Las Vegas show's development from rehearsal to stage. The film utilizes thousands of feet of materials and includes sequences added to capture Elvis' performances with greater intimacy while providing a behind-the-scenes window into his creative process.

The Blu-ray edition of Elvis: That's the Way It Is is presented in 1080p with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround, and includes both the original theatrical cut and the retooled 2001 Special Edition version of the film. Extras are as follows:
    • Patch It Up: The Restoration of Elvis: That's The Way It Is
    • 12 Outtakes: Song/Non-musical Sequences
    • 2001 Special Edition Cut
    • 1970 Original Theatrical Version "

I already have the barebones 2000 DVD and the 2 disc 2007 release.

The ONLY way I'll get this is if the Original Movie is offered with an audio option better than the MONO soundtrack thrown at us in the 2007 release.

    If not, I'll pass...

Call me a fool for assuming, but one would think that they wouldn't bother with a Blu Ray release unless both versions had been restored and remastered. We'll see.

I'm all over this. Hopefully the extra performances will wind up giving us, in addition to the two cuts of the film, the majority
of performances (or songs, at least) that were shot in full for the project.

And it streets four days after my birthday, no less!

In his highest grossing movie, Elvis shares the screen with Ann-Margret, easily creating the most electrifying teaming Elvis had on screen. He plays Lucky Jackson, a Grand Prix race driver working at a casino to raise cash for a new engine; she’s a hotel swimming instructor - and the romantic action revs up from their first meeting. George Sidney, who also directed Ann-Margret in Bye Bye Birdie, combines the hormonal heat wave with
fascinating sights of ’60s Las Vegas. David Winters (West Side Story) choreographed the 10 musical song-and-dance scenes which also featured his dancers. Songs include the high-roller title track, the stars’ duet on “The Lady Loves Me,” her sultry “Appreciation” and The King’s version of Ray Charles’ “What’d I Say.” The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 stereo.

    Special Features:
    · Commentary by Steve Pond, rock journalist and author of “Elvis in Hollywood”
    · Featurette Kingdom: Elvis in Vegas

    Elvis Aaron Presley
    (1935 – 1977)
Elvis Presley was one of Hollywood’s top box-office draws, starring in 31 feature films and two theatrically-released concert documentaries over the course of his career. His music was as much a part of his box-office success as his good looks and charisma. In fact, some of his top-selling songs were from the movie soundtracks. Eleven of his soundtrack albums made it into the top ten on the Billboard Album charts and of those, four became number one hits. It is estimated that Elvis has sold over a billion records worldwide, more records than any other artist in record industry history, and even 30 years after his death, Elvis still conquers new legions of fans as even compilations of his RCA recordings, such as “Elvis 30 #1 Hits” and “Elvis 2nd to None,” have both topped the Billboard charts of best-selling albums.

More biographical information is available at the official Elvis Presley Web site, http://www.elvis.com.

(Is this 12 out takes per disc or what?) ... hope there in better shape than the VHS quality that was issued on the 2xdvd set ... and with SONY been at this showing, maybe a cd set to push the above blue - ray set?.

I'm very excited about the TTWII Blu-Ray coming out. Having both versions in such high quality is going to be awesome. It's gonna be a long 4 months though....

I'm a little puzzled at the re-release of Viva Las Vegas when so few of his films have been released on Blu Ray. To this point, only "Love Me Tender", "Jailhouse Rock", and "Viva Las Vegas" have been released.

Where are "King Creole", "Loving You", "G.I. Blues", and "Blue Hawaii"?

Looking forward to viewing both cuts of the program.

    ps:

Apple/Universal why not follow the thinking here for eventual Blu - ray for " Let It Be"

Let me join in and say I can't wait for this!

Well it'll all be in hi-def, and that's a big deal!

Is Elvis: On Tour the only instance of this happening (with "The Promised Land" being removed), or has this happened multiple times? If I recall, the issue was with Chuck Berry not giving his consent to use the song. I don't remember any Chuck songs in this movie so maybe we're in the clear.

Some of these can be streamed in HD (e.g. Blue Hawaii). I realize that's that Blu-ray quality, but it's better than DVD. And hopefully that means they'll be released on Blu-ray soon.

Well you have convinced me, I will be partaking in this release...if it means a little better quality and maybe some new extras etc...I'm in. Now if they would only re-cut, re-master, and re-release Elvis On Tour...I'd be doing cartwheels over here !!!!

  20. Too bad the original theatrical version is included as a DVD though... why wouldn't they put this on Blu-ray too?

Yeah man ! I want it bad !!!! Amazon has new copies for like $40....a bit pricey in my book...I'm a fairly recent [last 4 years] Elvis fanatic. Trying to find all good stuff by the King....I have most of it...but I want the stellar material he recorded prior to the 68 Comeback Special. I've read Tomorrow Is A Long Time is "the" place to find it all in one spot !! Gotta have it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
