vinyl puppy: I believe the track you are referring to is "Danger" off Worldwide Underground. Another of my favorite tracks of hers and one of her toughest-sounding ones too. EXcellent choice.

Baduizm & the live album is all I have as well.

There's a great version of Stay on the live album http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pV2CSgZ1aE

A lot of these female singer seem to put out 1 or 2 good records, then go have kids, the music goes down the tubes and a few years later they do a come back ...with mixed results.

I got Vol 1 and it is excellent. She does not disappoint.

  8. I have all her albums and while I do enjoy her latest releases, none of them quite captured me like Baduizm.

I'll rep for Mama's Gun, too. My favorite of all her full length output.

Here's a fun song she did with Rahzel (formerly of The Roots) that is from 1999. Getting REALLY progressive here. The entire backing track is done by beatboxing (Rahzel's specialty).

Rahzel feat. Erykah Badu - Southern Gul (as in Girl)

My kids dance like crazy to "back in the day" ... We often start out the weekend by putting that song on and letting them go for it ...

In fact, Mama's Gun may be my favorite album produced by The Soulquarians.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soulquarians

Which is including these stellar efforts:

    Year Artist Album
1999 The Roots Things Fall Apart
    2000 D'Angelo Voodoo
2000 Common Like Water for Chocolate
    2000 Erykah Badu Mama's Gun
    2001 Bilal 1st Born Second
    2002 The Roots Phrenology
2002 Common Electric Circus (I still don't understand the hate this album gets. I may like it more than his other albums including LWFC.)

  12. A friend and I were discussing "Voodoo" the other day, after he picked up the "Voodoo Soul Essentials" LP the other day (I ordered mine on eBay recently). "Voodoo" is a great album, somehow, it eluded me for this long! Maybe cause I was only 14 when it was released and not quite into the same music I enjoy now, hahaha.

Any or all of these albums could benefit from a proper LP release. D'Angelo's "Soul Essentials" original LP does sound great, however, not sure about the source...

I say we need well mastered LPs from the original tapes for these albums. (If possible... I'm certain most were recorded analog and probably mixed the same.)

A few other random Badu songs/appearances:

Today (from Red Star Sounds compilation in 2001) - very chill
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLdkZZDy5Ms

A Child With The Blues (from Eve's Bayou OST in 1997) - sounds like a jazz club number (in a good way)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cstdW3M7ol0

Your Precious Love (feat. D'Angelo) (originally from High School High OST in 1996) - one of the few modern versions of a classic song that still actually sounds classic
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQNMAadLnLE

Poetry (RH Factor, a Roy Hargrove side project, with Q-Tip from 2003) - Badu doesn't appear until later in the track
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X963i4C7RWk

Be Thankful (Guest appearance on Omar's track from 2000) - Sorry, but not touching the original William DeVaughn version.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDOaUXnBD9k

Afro Blue (Guest appearance on Robert Glasper Experiment album from 2012) - Cover of the Mongo Santamaria track. There will also be a remix by 9th Wonder on the upcoming Glasper EP due Oct. 9 that is an extension of the album released earlier this year
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-0JZlrk4xA

    Real Thing (produced by Madlib)
    http://soundcloud.com/bamalovesoul/erykah-badu-real-thing-music

Love Of My Life (From Brown Sugar OST in 2002/2003) - features Common and is an ode to hip hop.

Liberation (Guest appearance on Outkast track with several others including Cee-Lo) - Badu comes in around 4:00. One of my top 3 Outkast songs of all time. Very beautiful song.

I like her work, but IMO she still hasn't lived up to her potential. When I heard her first album, I felt that she could be really great :goodie:. I haven't heard that from her yet :(.

Thanks a lot for these links! Very cool!

It reminds those of us who love Erykah, that we're definitely not alone. Some of the most brilliant minds in hip hop (like Madlib, Outkast, and Common) and neosoul (freakin D'Angelo) and jazz (like Hargrove and Glasper) agree that she is the bomb.

That voice, that phrasing, that attitude, that ambition, that sweet spot where jazz and soul and funk and hiphop all get together and celebrate, all that's in Ms. Erykah Badu.:edthumbs:

I watched the old Chappelle show rerun last night to see her song again. She just sets up such an irresistable groove. Talk about "laying in the groove"--she's got it down to a science.

She absolutely owns Hotline Bling now.

What a great version she does.

Mama's Gun seems to be the one that gets the critical plaudits. I have it but prefer her debut, Baduizm. Nice to see a thread on her.

I think Baduizm is her best album. For me it's extra special as I bought it in Philladelphia without knowing her or her music. And it turned out to be such a great album (also, as I live in Europe, being in Philadelphia itself was already very special).

The Live album is also great, although most of Baduizm is on it. Somewhere she does an awesome cover of Funkin' for Jamaica, and the Tyrone track alone is worth getting the album.

Mama's Gun is great too, as is Worldwide Underground. There are some great tracks on the New Amerykah albums, but I don't like most of the remaining tracks at all. A bit directionless, IMHO.

I still hate myself for not going to her concert(s) in Amsterdam. At the time her performances were really hit or miss, and I didn't want to spend the money. Anyway, I hope she comes back someday and then I'll be there!

I really liked Baduizm and the live album as well. Lost interest after that.
There a great cover of Stay by Rufus on Baduizm live.

Not sure if this was posted anywhere else, but Baduizm just got a vinyl reissue and for the first time, the entire album is available on vinyl (on 2 LP's). All previous vinyl pressings were missing 5 of the tracks and the cover art consisted of a plain black sleeve with a sticker on the front.
