Curiosity has got the better of me. I've just ordered the Studio 2 Stereo LP.

I “like”d this post but it’s a bit heartbreaking to read. I’m a major Bolan fan and I would’ve given anything to be around back then - I would’ve bought multiple copies of everything.

I sometimes think he turned off so many people in the press that they had it in for him and sabotaged some of his releases. “Children Of The Revolution” and “20th Century Boy” should’ve both been #1 hits. But I guess maybe his fan base had simply moved on.

I appreciate Bowie’s work but I think Marc was well up there in the genius stakes. My favourite lyricist and I still think he’s misunderstood by a lot of people. Yes, he could be ridiculous at times but always with a wink!

I like to think these threads help out Amazon and the like who are seeing a sudden sales upsurge for compilation albums by the likes of Suzi Quatro, Sweet, Slade and Lynsey De Paul!

    Thinking of doing 1978 next.

    Anyone interested in that year?

Yes me, 1978 was a great year for pop music as I recall....

One of my favourite years for music. Be good to have a look what was in the charts then!

A few of the biggest selling UK singles of all time were from 1978.

We should do the years in sequence. When we've gotten up to '78 you should definitely do it - it looks like a pretty good year (although '79 looks even better).

The best 70's years were 72/73/78/79 I would say...

  14. 1979 is the year I left school.
I also believe it I'd one of the best years ever for varied Pop music.

  15. My thoughts too.
Originally our thread leader Bob was going to go through to 1984, but decided against it as he felt people were not contributing or interested enough.
Other have since said they are willing to continue the thread ad originally intended.
Surely this is best for, continued interest and seeing how the charts have evolved over the decade or so to be covered.

1979 was the year I believe when the most singles were sold in the UK, so that will be a very good year. My big era for singles was from 77 to 85, I bought singles after that but not with the same amount of enthusiasm, usually for groups/singers I particularly liked, whereas before then it would be for the song in itself.

  17. I'm sure I read the peak year for single sales was actually 1981!!!
I wouldn't be surprised if it was 1979 tho....it was my peak year for buying singles!!!
Once I'd started work...I started to buy more albums.

Partly inspired by Bobby's years, partly to try and generate some more interest in all of the years covered so far, but mostly for fun, I've started this thread.

Your favourite six consecutive years of music.

Unless anyone else would like to take over, please P.M. me if you do, I intend to go backwards from the 1971 thread to 1970, and forward from the 1974 thread when they end.

Hopefully between Bobby, anyone else interested, and myself, we can cover a number of years.

    Let's have fun with it!

My thoughts at the time was that 1973 was a big drop of in quality especially after 70-72. Nostalgia can make things look better but I can't say this changes my overall view. Still a strong year for albums.

  20. Andy Smith

Andy Smith .....Like a good pinch of snuff......

What he said. Talking of.....anybody pick up the 32-CD Nazareth box-set? I've about 5 of their, plus a 'Greatest Hits'. I can't imagine I'll pick it up, but was wondering what it's like.

    Come on Bob.

Let's include 1971 on that tremendous list. Two number ones from T.Rex plus Rod and Slade's first number ones.

Let us now shed the spotlight on those that had somehow missed topping the Official charts, but did sneak in to #1 on NME's charts, starting with:
NME #340: "The Jean Genie" by David Bowie
    (#1 for 1 week - 17 January 1973)

UK labels (B side: "Ziggy Stardust"):

US labels (B side: "Hang On To Yourself"):

Hey, did you or are you doing any more of these 70s UK #1 singles threads? Just read through the one from 72 and this one for the last 24 hours and I'd love to get in on one that's not already pretty much done. Great threads! I learned a lot and ordered a couple compilation CDs, a Slade CD, and a Sweet CD.
