"I Don't Like Mondays" is a song by Irish band The Boomtown Rats about the 1979 Cleveland Elementary School shooting in San Diego. The song was a number one single in the UK Singles Chart for four weeks during the summer of 1979, and ranks as the sixth biggest hit of the UK in 1979. Written by Bob Geldof, it was the band's second number one single.

The full length version appeared on the group's third album, The Fine Art of Surfacing. It includes a reprise of the first verse, which was edited for the single release.

    History
According to Geldof, he wrote the song after reading a telex report at Georgia State University's campus radio station, WRAS, on the shooting spree of 16-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer, who fired at children in a school playground at Grover Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego, California, US on 29 January 1979, killing two adults and injuring eight children and one police officer. Spencer showed no remorse for her crime and her full explanation for her actions was "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day". Geldof had been contacted by Steve Jobs to play a gig for Apple, inspiring the opening line about a 'Silicon chip'. The song was first performed less than a month later.

Geldof explained how he wrote the song:

I was doing a radio interview in Atlanta with [Johnnie] Fingers and there was a telex machine beside me. I read it as it came out. Not liking Mondays as a reason for doing somebody in is a bit strange. I was thinking about it on the way back to the hotel and I just said 'Silicon chip inside her head had switched to overload'. I wrote that down. And the journalists interviewing her said, 'Tell me why?' It was such a senseless act. It was the perfect senseless act and this was the perfect senseless reason for doing it. So perhaps I wrote the perfect senseless song to illustrate it. It wasn't an attempt to exploit tragedy.

Geldof had originally intended the song as a B-side, but changed his mind after the song was successful with audiences on the Rats' US tour. Spencer's family tried unsuccessfully to prevent the single from being released in the United States. Despite being a major hit in the United Kingdom, it only reached #73 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The song was played regularly by album-oriented rock format radio stations in the United States throughout the 1980s, although radio stations in San Diego refrained from playing the track for some years in respect to local sensitivities about the shooting.

The strings were arranged by Fiachra Trench. Apart from Geldof, pianist Johnnie Fingers and drummer Simon Crowe are the only members of the group who appear on the recording.

In the UK the song reached Number One on the singles chart in July 1979, and won the Best Pop Song and Outstanding British Lyric categories at the Ivor Novello Awards.

    Live performances
On 9 September 1981, Geldof was joined on stage by fellow Boomtown Rat, Johnnie Fingers, to perform the song for The Secret Policeman's Ball sponsored by Amnesty International. A recording of that performance appears on the 1982 album, The Secret Policeman's Other Ball.

The Boomtown Rats performed the song for Live Aid at Wembley Stadium in 1985. This was the band's final major appearance. On singing the line, "And the lesson today is how to die", Geldof paused for 20 seconds while the crowd applauded on the significance to those starving in Africa that Live Aid was intended to help.

At a concert in London in 1995, almost ten years later to the day, Bon Jovi covered the song after being joined on stage by Geldof at Wembley Stadium. This recorded performance features on Bon Jovi's live album One Wild Night Live 1985–2001, as well as on the bonus 2-CD edition of These Days. Bon Jovi was again joined by Geldof for a performance of the song at The O2 Arena on 23 June 2010, the 10th night of their 12-night residency. Geldof himself performed a version of the song while hosting the Live 8 concert in London, on 2 July 2005.

"I Don't Like Mondays" was subsequently covered by Tori Amos on her 2001 album Strange Little Girls and later by G4 on their 2006 album Act Three.

This was the sixth and last Boomtown Rats single I bought over a two year period, following a rave review in Record Mirror by one Paula Yates of, Looking After No. 1.

For a band that started off with the energy and angry lyrics of the debut, along with Rat Trap this was a far more mature song and a deserved big hit. After the two number one singles, Bob and the Rats didn't ever come close to replicating that success.

I Don’t Like Mondays is not only the best Boomtown Rats single, it’s one of the best records of 1979 too. Just a great song. It’s a shame Geldof was never able to follow it and went swiftly down the dumper (musically) soon after. I was heartbroken.

I loved the Boomtown Rats and for me this was the their peak. It was a huge step forward from their previous singles and had a great video to boot.
Unfortunately it was down hill all the way after this. There was just so much great music around at this time and it was quickly about to get a whole lot better. I think maybe the Boomtown Rats suddenly seemed dated amongst the new pop artists. Of course their records got worse as well which never helps :D

I've always thought this track was very Elvis Costello. Should have been a much bigger hit in America, but then Costello flopped here, too. So...

Don't think it helped that he had the same first name as the King of Rock & Roll and the same last name as Bud Abbott's partner . . .

Wow, disco sort of just evaporated from those charts. Gary Numan was utterly surrounded by it just a few posts ago.

"I Don't Like Mondays" is a stunner, brilliantly arranged and performed. I agree with all assembled that Mr. Geldof has never topped it.

It's depressing to reflect that there was a time that school shootings didn't happen with sickening regularity here in the States. I recall my classmates and I being utterly stunned, numb with disbelief that a girl our age had done such a thing.

This was, after all, after the infamous "Disco Demolition Night" at Comiskey Park in Chicago on July 12, 1979, organized by local radio DJ Steve Dahl (in conjunction with Bill Veeck who was then-owner of the Chicago White Sox baseball team). Disco records were burned at the event, but beyond that such damage was done to the playing field that, being as this was held in-between games in a doubleheader, the second game ended up forfeited to the opposing team. It would appear that the "death" of disco spurred by this event had by this point spread to the UK.

This is a bit confusing, because "disco" as such didn't die, after all. Rock and roll didn't become the force the promoters of the DDN wanted. They merely changed the disco elements and rebranded as "dance" music, and it dominated the 80s. In the UK, 1980 was a great year for dance, after all.

The stylistic changeover from the '70s to the '80s happened faster than in any other decade I've lived thru. It was like somebody flicked a switch.

Disco absolutely died, and anything that sounded like pre-1980 disco had a very hard time charting - let alone charting high - after the summer of 1980.

"Dance music" ain't disco, although it inherited quite a bit from its predecessor. And "dance music" would never become the kind of chart and cultural force disco had been, although by the end of the '80s it was certainly a major component of the charts.

Donna Summer had her best year in 1979 with the Bad Girls album, duet with Streisand and her On The Radio comp. Was this disco or just dance music? I’m hopelessly confused.

Disco was still alive, if not well, by the end of '79. It was by the end of '80 where it had clearly fallen off a cliff.

Something similar happened a couple of years later on the US charts, where country had been staging an impressive Top 10 takeover, and then vanished more quickly than it had come in the wake of The Human League's "Don't You Want Me".

They deserved a Nobel Prize for accomplishing that.

Interesting that while the Boomtown Rats and Tubeway Army hits of that year did not really do that big on the Billboard Charts, over time I Don't Like Mondays has been played a lot on alt rock stations and Are Friends Electric? turns up on Sirius digital stations and on PAs at stores. They are played more than many songs that made the US top 40 at the time.

I can't stand gobby Geldof, and The Rats were always plastic punks.......but IDLM is undeniably a very classy single. I love the video, especially those Village Of The Damned-like close ups of the bug-eyed kids.
