Is the "Physical Graffiti" your copy with the "cough"?

No it isn't my "keeper" copy but, come to think of it, I haven't actually checked this particular one. Will do so tonight then report back.

I have 2 different matrix 55XD PG's and they do not have the cough. If there is one with a cough, I would like to know about it.

Okay boys and girls, I think I have solved the mystery of the now-you-hear-it, now-you-don't "cough". :)

It seems that the very first 55XD pressing of 'Physical Graffiti' is identical to the Japan for US version, which has the cough. The way to identify the first pressing 55XD pressing is the catalogue number on the CDs themselves - they also carry the Japan for US catalogue number in parentheses; i.e. 55XD-661 (200-2-1). Also, the matrix number around the hub is the Japan for US matrix number (SS-200-2-1-V...etc.), not the 55XD-661...etc. matrix number.

One thing I should also add is that the 55XD with cough does sound better to my ears than the 55XD without cough. As others have commented in other threads, the non-cough version sounds a little flatter.

The good news is that the 55XD that I have for sale IS the one with the cough. The bad news is that I have just ended the listing early, because I have to amend the description. Don't worry, though, it will be back up shortly

That's odd then, I have a 55XD set exactly as you describe above Owais - but NO cough. IMTOD ends and Houses starts up - nothing in between.

Disc 1 Catalogue number on disc is
    55XD-661
    (200-2-1)
    Matrix is 200-2-1-V2E19

Disc 2 Catalogue number on disc is
    55XD-661
    (200-2-2)
    Matrix is 200 * -2-2-V4E19 (could be 14 or 15 or 18 or 19 - hard to see)
the * is an overstrike which does not appear on my Disc 1 matrix.

I think we discussed this in a Thread in Music but I cannot find it.

Guess I'll have to bid on the 55XD cough version then - when will this end

I'm confused. My Japan for USA SS200-2 has no cough. I have a 55XD also with no cough.

Mine does not have SS ahead of the matrix though. Maybe you are on to something there?

My 55XD-661-2 (with obi Y5,500) has the matrix "SAMPLE (with 3 Japanese letters)" doesn't have the cough/chatter after IMTOD.

My copy has the 200-2-1/2 under the catalog number on the CDs and was made by Warner-Pioneer Corporation.

Owais, I think the opposite is true of what you stated above, the earliest pressings (mine's a Promo) don't have the cough/chatter but were later added. This may be stated in the thread linked above, but it seems to be true.

Does anyone recall Barry's comments about the cough?

He said it was a mistake at the pressing plant and that they quickly re-issued it with the cough. This should mean that, actually, the non-cough versions are the "first pressing" and the cough versions are from the second "corrected" run.

If it was a mistake at the pressing plant and not in the mastering, why should the 55XD with the cough sound any different than the 55XD without, aside from the cough?

Has anybody else compared the 55XD w/ and w/o coughs and heard a sound quality difference other than the coughs?

I think I'm just going to splice in the cough to my 55XD from a USA pressing.

I think I read that in the thread that Paul posted. I know I saw it somewhere and it just seemed to obvious that a promo copy of the 55XD version without the cough would be the earliest version and if there are 55XD versions with the cough, they would have to have been corrected.

Just because they re-issued it quickly doesn't mean that it wouldn't be a 55XD..this was still early on in the manufacture of Cds, so it could easily have kept the first catalogue number.
