Yeah, those squats really paid off!

Plot wise, a good episode, but I'm finding there are way too many dumb/stupid characters designed to get cheap laughs.

What was with Carrie Coon not being able to set off the door sensor? Was that supposed to be a reference to her character on 'The Leftovers' not being able to operate touchscreens or something else? Seems weird they'd just throw that in for no reason.

Anyone else suspect her deceased Hugo (?)-award-winning stepfather might have been the guy who was obsessed with UFOs in the last season? Remember, when Patrick Wilson was waiting in line for gas? Or at least someone who's hidden past might tie-in with the flying saucer. Someone saw something and he'd be about the right age.

Really? On this show you don't need a reason to throw in weird!

It happened to her in the first episode also.

It just seems really coincidentally bizarre that the same thing is happening on two different shows airing at the same time to characters played by the same actor.

I dont watch the other show, so I had no idea. So doors with sensors dont open for her in the other show either?
I get a kick out of it in Fargo though.

Plus her cell phone never works. Plus she doesn't like computers. Starting to see a pattern.

Shea Whigham is quickly becoming the TV equivalent of the Stanton-Walsh Rule.

I agree with this. You can only run so far with roughly the same premise every season: quirky and dumb characters. Dumb mistakes are made, baddies emerge and cause havoc ultimately to be taken down by luck or some other device. I'm in for this season for sure, but if Coon's character says something about "a little bit of money" well, I dunno. *

    * I think they used that line in the first season didn't they?

Some guy like Varga comes and takes over your business, anyone with brains goes straight to the FBI. Anyone with brains and money also hires a top-notch private security force.

You guys are raining on my parade. Haha
I think this season is great thus far. Take it for what it is, a great entertaining television show. Keeps me focused for 1+ hour every wednesday night.

I'll agree that it's a slow start. And it's definitely formulaic. But it's comforting. Somehow familiar yet new.

Was the truck driving heavy, Yuri, the same Yuri that the German was looking for in the opening scene in episode 1?

Took me 2 episodes to realise I was watching Ewan McGregor, not my fave actor but doing a great job(s) in this, as is David Thewlis as the horrible creepy Brit, (whose vocal delivery is reminding me of someone else, darned if I can think who it is).

    Formula?
This season we get a lady cop who's the nicest and smartest character investigating a crime that goes horribly wrong with unintended fatal consequences to someone sharing the last name as the guy who hired the criminal to do the original crime.

I'm getting a real 'Burn After Reading' feel from this season so far. Only one person has money (and probably not for long) and only maybe Coon's character has brains.

At this moment, currently the 'Better Call Saul' and 'Fargo' threads are at the top of the board topics and it got me thinking. For me, both shows are on a slow boil, a little too slow for me but I'm not going anywhere. It's obvious the shows have many fans here, I guess we have a thing for folksy mid-American crime stories. This week on the Sundance network, Gomorrah began it's 2nd season. I mention this for 2 reasons; I assume that there's a few fans of the crime genre on this thread. But more importantly, Gomorrah is one of the greatest 'crime genre' stories ever done! Often compared to the Sopranos, the Godfather, and Breaking Bad! For me, it easily ranks along those shows and flicks like Casino and Goodfellas, it's THAT good! And as fantastic as the 1st season was, the premier this week kicked it up quite a few notches. Really fantastic work, and it looks like nobody around these parts is watching. Just thought I'd give you guys a head's up!

The comparisons I keep reading are to The Wire.

I could be wrong, but this isn't exactly right. In both episodes of Fargo the automatic door wouldn't open. In the Leftovers, Nora couldn't get the kiosk at the airport to work for her when it asked if she was traveling with an infant.

Similar problems with technology, but not the same problems.

The navigation system wouldn't work for her either on "The Leftovers".
