  1. Two of my top-10 faces are by fellow Canucks, oddly enough: "Nothin'" by the Ugly Ducklings, and "125" by the Haunted (7" version - it's rawer, and thus better).

Another one is "We All Love Peanut Butter" by the One Way Street, a rough "Little Black Egg" knockoff that has a great, haunting feel and some of the most destroyed fuzz guitar I've ever heard.

I love that you mentioned Crazy Elephant's "Gimme Gimme Good Lovin". That is what I call a the best song to represent the little known genre of "garage bubblegum"!

I was wondering if anyone was going to mention "125" by the Haunted. It has every element of a perfect garage band song: catchy opening, great harmonica, a great drum hook, great organ riff, pounding bass, sloppy guitar solo, snotty singer, and somewhat suggestive lyrics.

"Hey Little Girl" by the Syndicate Of Sound also fits the bill as a garage favorite of mine!

"A Little Bit of Soul" by the Music Explosion, from 1967 as I recall, not 1964 as it says on the title here. I found this LP, and never knew it back in the day, but on LP, on my system now -- what dynamics! Fun to crank up!

Back From the Grave is certainly more obscure. No pesky labels with national distribution or top 40 hits lurking in there! I haven't played them in a long time, but seem to recall liking Volumes 1 and 8 the most. Have they gone past 8 in more recent years?

Only The Shadows of the Night version qualifies as garage rock. Micks and Limeys couldn't afford garages. At least I think that's why they call it "freak beat" over there. ;)

Got to throw "Beg Borrow and Steal" in there, too. Though the hit was credited to The Ohio Express, it was really just a remixed version of the track originally cut and released by The Rare Breed.

Garage rock is one of my favorite genres, no question about it! Here's a great tune from Chicago by Saturday's Children that I guess I'd call "Christmas garage". Very inventive track that combines Brubeck's "Take Five" with "Deck the Halls". I also love the jazzy feel and the vocal harmonies:

If you feel that way bout it [being "Freak Beat"], you feel that way bout it [not 60's "Garage"].
Butt "Them ~ Gloria" Decca '64, helpED launch a lot of "Garage Bands" in the mid-Sixties over here in the US!

Wasn't the definition of garage a bunch of American kids trying to sound like the edgier British groups? I know that excludes some of the NW proto-punk that predated the British Invasion (as well as The Hanky-Panky) but generally...
