    I know Love has been mentioned, but I have to single out My Flash On You from the s/t. Incredibly angry vocal from Arthur, and KILLER fuzz bass. It's just a chip off Hey Joe you wonder why they felt the need to cover the latter on the same record, aside from throwing MacLean a bone.

    Good stuff from Austin (the Elevators were great, but certainly not the only ones):

    (The video is kind of over the top, but I think in a good way.)

    i "likED" that thought & it was defiantly American "50's R&R/Blues/R&B" going cross "The Pond" then coming back all UK "British Invasion" on US [p.i.] having a BIG influence.
    Just the HUGE amount of American teenage bands "The Beatles" startED!!!

    Glad you agree "Them" [p.i.] had an influence in the USA.
    Do you think of "Them" as "Garage or Freak Beat"?

    American kids all so grew up on American "R&R", so Buddy Holley, Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, EDdie Cochran, & other US 50's rockers were influential as well.
    American songs like "Tobacco Road", "Louie Louie", "Night Train", & many, many more were U S of A "Garage" staples.
    "... know that excludes some of the NW proto-punk that predated the British Invasion... "
    And yah, like i think the Texas "Garage/Pysch" scene was HUGLY influencED by previous US South West musical styles.

    ============

    The frinkinternet is one of the GREATEST thingies ever & one of the GREATEST thingies ever on the frininternet is this "60's Garage Song" finder; here's some "Them ~ Gloria" cover visions:

    "Hard to Cry" by The Northwest Company is essential

    Also the T-Bones "I Want You" (1967), which is more like proto-punk.

    I really do think that "freak beat" is just the UK name for "garage rock." In fact, wasn't "garage" just "punk" until the 70s punk explosion coopted the name? Sam The Sham actually refers to punk music in "I Wish It Were Me."
