    Number three in a continuing series . . .

Today we're looking at the always-a-bridemaid-never-a-bride, number two hits of 1966. These songs peaked in the second slot, but never went on to claim the throne.

As always, vote early and often. Post opinions and memories, too. I'll list the songs that denied these entries later in the thread. Have fun!

1958: Jerry Lee Lewis - "Great Balls of Fire"
1972: Elvis Presley - "Burning Love"

I really had to think it over, but I voted for "Sunny." What a list, though!

The number two songs listed above were denied by the following number ones. Looking at the number ones, it's hard to imagine a better year for pop:

"Barbara Ann" by The Beatles's "We Can Work It Out" and Petula Clark's "My Love"

"19th Nervous Breakdown" by SSGt Barry Sadler's "The Ballad Of The Green Berets"

"Daydream" by The Righteous Brothers's "(You're My) Soul And Inspiration"

"Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" by The Righteous Brothers's "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration"

"Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" by The Mamas & The Papas's "Monday, Monday"

"A Groovy Kind Of Love" by Percy Sledge's "When A Man Loves A Woman."

"Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind?" by The Rolling Stones's "Paint It, Black"

"Red Rubber Ball" by The Beatles's "Paperback Writer"

"Lil' Red Riding Hood" by The Troggs's "Wild Thing" and The Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer In The City"

"Sunny" by The Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer In The City"

"Yellow Submarine" by The Supremes's "You Can't Hurry Love"

"Mellow Yellow" by The Beach Boys's "Good Vibrations" and The New Vaudeville Band's "Winchester Cathedral"

"Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron" by The Monkees's "Now I'm A Believer"

Hard decision ... the year I graduated (Yes ... I did graduate) from high school ... I voted for "Mellow Yellow" ... but I could have easily voted for "Daydream", "A Groovy Kind of Love", "Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind?", "Red Rubber Ball" or "Sunny".

Daydream. It's such a nice, simple yet brilliantly written song. Great melody... one of the best.

I'm with Jamie, and although I am a huge Beatles fan, Yellow Submarine was no "Help". I have to go with Daydream. I tried to put myself back in 1966, without having these songs been burned into my head for 37 years.

"Daydream" for it's time, and still is, a wonderful song.

Ed Bishop Incredibly, I'm still here

Same here; had to be the Stones. "Snoopy" is endearing because Peanuts always was; "Red Rubber Ball" a mild summer breeze; the rest are either great or approach that level, with "Sunny" kind of the dark horse of the bunch. Hebb followed that one with "A Satisfied Mind"--good record, probably not the best choice for the next single, though, since that was pretty much his chartmaking career.

Went with "Daydream," while admitting that "Red Baron" was a young, guilty pleasure.

Is there anything else? I didn't even have to think, "19 Nervous Breakdown" all the way.

Have to go with "Sunny". I first learned the song from Marvin Gaye's version, but eventually came to the Hebb single. Love the thing.

Went with, "Barbara Ann," but would have voted for Riding Hood if it had been the Stones version.

    No contest.

"On our first trip I tried so hard to rearrange your mind
But after a while I realised you were disarranging mine..."

"19th" got to #2 but they banned the Byrds "Eight Miles High" for drug connotations?

I wonder if people advised The Cyrkle against cute misspellings. Seems to me it'd get mispronounced and misspelled a lot, like the The One-ders.
