Joy Division: She's Lost Control (extended remix I think was 1980? original was '79). Love and Rockets: If There's a Heaven Above Japan: The Art of Parties Love those 3...
Pet Shop Boys have SOOOOO many 12" mixes to choose from, but my favorite is the "dance mix" of Love Comes Quickly. Not one of their most well-known songs, but the mix will put you in a 7 minute heavenly trance. Pet Shop Boys - Love Comes Quickly (12" dance mix)
Screaming Blue Messiahs-I Wanna Be A Flintstone (extended). Big Audio Dynamite-The Bottom Line (original, not the Rick Rubin U.S. mix). Talking Heads-And She Was
Agree to both of you. I' ll just add "Feel U Up", which long hook version came as "Party Man"'s b side
One of my favorite extended versions is "Torch" by Soft Cell. Alas, I only have that version on CD, not on vinyl (yet). Even though I grew up in the 80s, I didn't appreciate 12" singles until recently. I'm making up for it though, having bought about 100 in the last few years.
So many to pick from, here's a few I still listen to : Grace Jones - "Slave To The Rhythm <Hot Blooded Mix>" Propaganda - "p:Machinery <Polish>" Act - "Snobbery & Decay <That's Entertainment>" Altered Images - "I Could Be Happy" and also "See Those Eyes" Public Image Ltd. - "Death Disco" and also "Memories" Naked Eyes - "Promises, Promises" Rolling Stones - "One Hit <To The Body>" U2 - "Two Hearts Beat As One <Club Version>" Visage - "Fade To Grey"
Owner Of A Lonely Heart by Yes That Was Yesterday by Foreigner Long Train Running by Doobie Brothers Little Lies by Fleetwood Mac
Fire Woman (LA Rock Mix) - The Cult Shout (US Remix) - Tears for Fears Axel F (remix) - Harold Faltermeyer Dancing In The Dark (Blaster Mix) - Springsteen Sledgehammer (extended dance remix) [I also like the extended intro mix on the 12" single] - Peter Gabriel Tainted Love/Where did our love go - Soft Cell Some Like it Hot - Power Station Heat and Soul (dance mix) - T'Pau A_L
A few more : Rolling Stones - "Mixed Emotions <Chris Kimsey's 12" Mix>" <English> Beat - "Twist And Crawl" Kate Bush - "The Big Sky <Meteorogical Mix>" The The - "Perfect" And just about all the Martin Rushent <R.I.P. > 12" mixes of the Human League's singles from the "Dare" album. He also did the Altered Images extended mixes I referenced in my previous post. Not to mention Pete Shelley, etc. Great mixer, he was....
I like a lot of 80s remixes as they don't stray too far away from the original recording while kicking it up a notch. Elton John had a few good 12": Who Wears These Shoes?, Wrap Her Up, Heartache All Over The World, I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That.
Soft Cell - Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go Aztec Camera - Jump (Loaded Version) with the gonzo guitar solo at the end makes me laugh with glee every time I hear it. Take that Eddie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bzKzbucdnE Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark - the Arthur Baker "Blaster Mix" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKVxMEwX658
Yes - The Rhythm of Love remixes, the Love Will Find a Way remixes are pretty good too but I think the Rhythm of Love remixes are the best out of all of the Yes 12 inch singles. Whoever they got in to copy Sheila E and Tito Puente's playing styles for the Rhythm of Love remixes did a great job. Genesis - Tonight Tonight Tonight. I prefer the 12 inch remix to the album version, the middle section doesn't seem as boring on the 12 inch, it's a way cooler mix. Peter Gabriel - Big Time. Lots of bass/ Chapman Stick in this mix, it's a big Tony Levin showcase. Kate Bush - Experiment IV. I prefer it to the short single and video versions, the intro sounds too chopped up to me on the edited versions. Big Country - In a Big Country. They do lots of cool stuff with the drum intro.
Kate Bush: Running Up That Hill (better than the LP version IMO) Paranomia: Art Of Noise Wonderland: Big Country
The Elton one was definitely good! My friend never liked the standard mix but paid relatively big bucks to get the 12" - it wasn't easy to find...
