Talking Heads 12"ers from Speaking in Tongues. "Girlfriend is Better" & "Making Flippy Floppy" in particular (if I remember rightly). No one has mentioned New Order's "Blue Monday" and "Perfect Kiss"? Too obvious?
Flesh for Fantasy (below the belt mix) -- Billy Idol End of the Line (extended version) -- Traveling Wilburys Walk Like an Egyptian (extended dance mix) -- The Bangles (Yeah, I know, once upon a time, I was sure I never wanted to hear this song again, but 25 years has a way of cleansing things; plus this version has some great percussive elements in it.) Will You Love Me Tomorrow (single mix, long version) -- Bryan Ferry
I love '80s 12" extended mixes - too many to mention. However, I just received a UK compilation in the mail called Phil Harding Club Mixes of the '80s. Harding remixed a number of songs in the '80s and '90s, including many of the Stock Aitken Waterman hits. This collection features Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) (Murder Mix)" - reportedly the first time remastered from the original master - as well as an unreleased mix of Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up"; also remixes of the Blow Monkeys' "Digging Your Scene", Eighth Wonder's "I'm Not Scared" (written by PSB), and Five Star's "Rain or Shine". There's a Motown theme as well, including some (rather dated) mixes of the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back", the Four Tops' "Reach Out (I'll Be There)" and Diana Ross' "Love Hangover", and a few '80s productions by Jimmy Ruffin. It's a mixed bag but worthwhile if you're a collector of '80s 12-inches.
Lean On Me - Red Box ("dogmatix" version) My Heart Goes Bang Bang - Dead or Alive (the 7:22 version I saw on Youtube the other day; there are even longer ones) Wonderland - Big Country ... many others if I thought of them.
Always liked: Timex Social Club - Rumours [Shep Pettibone Remix] Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Two Tribes (any mix from the 80s) Frankie Goes To Hollywood - The Power Of Love >>Leave The Rest To The Gods<< (this has a special meaning, don't ask... ) Bandolero - Paris Latino Can't think of more, too early over here...
So many, here are the ones I could find on utube. If you're talking the original Blue Monday 12", it's not extended or remixed, that's the song, 12"-only, as it was released. There's Blue Monday '88, the IMO horrible later remix in various edits/versions, but I don't think anybody regards that as the "real" Blue Monday?
I don't think they are Domino Dancing was the only bona fide 'released as a 12"' mix on there (the previously released standard 12" - there's a second edition with an different remix on though.) Left to my own Devices on 12" is quite different to how it appears on Introspective - longer too! EDIT: I see Willowman has already covered most of this!
I wonder which one that is in relation to the UK titles. We got an extended mix, the M & M mix and The London Mix. I preferred the M & M mix.
I like the 12" mix of Wages Day by Deacon Blue. There's a harmonica part on there that's not on the single/LP version.
As others said, too many to mention. Some forum members may despise the 'typical' eighties sound, but one thing that flourished like in no other era was the extended 12" mix or remix. Nowadays the phenomenon has been mostly relegated to dance music, but in those days also many pop, rock and alternative singles got a 12" remix. The mother of them all has been mentioned already - Two tribes (Annihilation) by Frankie goes to Hollywood. Some other favourites that beat their 7" counterpart by a wide margin: FGTH - Rage Hard (the young person's guide to the 12" mix) Falco - Rock me Amadeus (Salieri mix) Simple Minds - Promised you a miracle Dead or Alive - You spin me round (Murder mix) Steve Winwood - Higher love Soft Cell - Torch Jermaine Jackson - Let's get serious (same as the album version though) Gary Byrd & the G.B. Experience - The crown Grace Jones - Pull up to the bumper Gwen Guthrie - Ain't nothing going on but the rent Greg Kihn Band - Jeopardy Aretha Franklin - Freeway of love Aretha Franklin & George Michael - I knew you were waiting for me And indeed many extended Prince jams, esp. Kiss, Girls & boys, I would die 4U, The future and Erotic city.
I only have some Springsteen and Stones stuff I believe..... Some of them have a nice bass going on. In Sweden I see a lot of new LP's and vinyl singles but I rarely see any 12" singles. Are they common in UK and US?
INXS - Need You Tonight (Ben Liebrand remix) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyINpG5PLro David Sylvian - Taking The Veil Blancmange - I Can See It (remix of Why Don't They Leave Things Alone?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kag4TfIy6f0 Shriekback - Hand On My Heart Talking Heads - Television Man (a UK remix, not the widely available US version) Level 42 - Out of Sight Out Of Mind http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8setnFqfHI China Crisis - Tragedy and Mystery http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaEfdofqA8U
Rage Hard is a great one. And a proper set of Prince 12" versions would make a lovely box set. Some are available on various comps, but would be good to have all of them, a-sides and b-sides, together.
