Actually like those late 80s Jeff Lynne-produced ones (when I'm in the mood for that thudding drum sound). If I AM in the mood, "End of the Line" and his (maybe extremely early 90s) "Every Little Thing" gives you plenty of it. Jeff
Several by Duran Duran: Girls on FIlm (Night Version) Planet Earth (Night Version) Hungry Like the Wolf (Night Version) Hold Back the Rain (12" re-mix) Union of the Snake (12" Monkey Mix) As mentioned before, Arcadia's Election Day (Consensus Mix) Genesis: Tonight, Tonight, Tonight (12" Extended remix) - if you can imagine that song being any longer than the album version already. Also already mentioned, Nu Shooz: I Can't Wait Laura Branigan: Self Control Several others, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.
Love that song - fortunately that 12" mix is on several of the many Altered Images compilations out there. So much better than the lp version.
Several posters have mentioned Big Country - I strongly suggest you seek out the cd collection "Greatest 12" Hits". I have it and it's a great listen with good sq straight through. http://www.discogs.com/Big-Country-Greatest-12-Hits/release/1394258 Tracklist : 1 East Of Eden (Extended Version) 6:32 2 The Teacher 6:17 3 Wonderland (Extended Version) 7:11 4 Fields Of Fire (Alternative Mix) 5:21 5 Just A Shadow (Extended Remix) 7:47 6 Chance 6:16 7 Where The Rose Is Sown (Extended Remix) 7:46 8 In A Big Country (Pure Mix) 6:20 9 Save Me 7:24 10 One Great Thing (Boston Mix) 5:34 11 Look Away (12" Mix) 6:31
You and I are exceptions. Most Bruce diehards really loathe those remixes, mostly - I believe - due to a kneejerk feeling that "dance mix = sell out". 10 years ago, I dated a woman who was an even bigger Bruce fanatic than I, and she hated the remixes. However, she had to admit she'd only heard them once or twice years before - when she heard them again, she acknowledged that they were okay. She never said she liked them but at least admitted they were better than she'd believed! The Standard Line for Bruce fans is to hate those versions, so many simply toe that line without questioning it...
So many to choose from... Inxs-To Look At You (only available on "Dekadance"-long out of print) Hall & Oates-Dance On Your Knees-remixed by Arthur Baker(a ubiquitous 80's remixer) Pete Shelley-Homosapien, Telephone Operator/Many A Time(dub), If You Ask Me/No One Like You-those medley remixes were killer- Tears For Fears-Shout (US Remix) Duran Duran-Planet Earth (night version) Ultravox had a bunch of em'-probably the best was "Dancing With Tears In My Eyes"- I actually thought the album version of "Two Tribes" was the best one.
I agree with all of these, especially the Blancmange track - pure aural manna! I'd also add the 12" mix of 'Blind Vision'. I love the guitar (David Rhodes) and slap bass (Neil Jason) combo (actually, pretty much all of BM's long ones were excellent): Blind Vision (Long Version) Soft Cell's 'Torch (Extended)' also totally baffled me: Torch (Extended) As someone else was asking about the 12" version of David Sylvian's 'Taking The Veil', I believe it was Sylvian's only "proper" extended mix and a really great one, done by Julian Mendelsohn. It's quite different from the album version, with more prominent bass and nicer reverb and stereo panning: Taking The Veil (Julian Mendelsohn Mix)
Automatically, yes. That version was the preferred cut for a DJ here in Detroit back in '85. Co-sign on nearly all 12" mixes from The Cure and Prince, but a special shout out to: The Cure - A Japanese Dream (Extended) and Prince - Another Lonely Christmas (Long Version) Two b-sides that you Must have the 12" extended versions of. Another good one is Debbie Gibson - Foolish Beat. Great conga & piano breakdown in the middle, and more sax!
Another fan of the Big Country and Springsteen Born In The USA-era 12"ers mentioned above (I burned a CD-R of the Springsteen batch a few years ago). Some other faves: Heaven 17 - Let Me Go Gene Love Jezebel - Desire Thomas Dolby - Get Out Of My Mix Talk Talk - Living In Another World
Lots of great ones already mentioned in the thread, and the one I would add is the extended version of 'Shame', by The Motels.
Have you guys checked out the Ben Liebrand Grand 12 Inches series? Amazing collection of extended mixes in pristine quality.
Major Tom Coming Home Mustapha Dance Bad Boys Don't You Want Me Break My Stride I Ran I Feel For You and many others...
Yes, I have all of them - 8 volumes up till now. Great volume for money, esp. since they're not very expensive over here in Holland. Must be different for international buyers. Ben Liebrand's work is a labour of love that can't be praised enough in these days of bad mastering. He usually goes for the best version available and goes to great lengths to get the original master tapes and clear the copyrights. When there's no other option available he goes for a needle drop, but even those are pretty good in general. Several years ago I started a thread on this forum (http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=90237&highlight=) about the availability of 12 inch versions of songs from the seventies and eighties. Either I have been digging deeper since then or there really have been more 12" versions become available on CD over the last few years. But is seems there's a lot of 12" comps out there right now. You only have to know how and where to look for them. Nevertheless, there's still a lot of stuff MIA. In Holland there's another series that compiles 12" versions of dance and pop hits. It's called Dance Classics and it has over 40 volumes right now and is still going strong. Later issues are making forays into the 90's though. I can even recommend these from a SQ viewpoint. Not audiophile quality, but at least they're not brickwalled at all, but mastered at a relatively low volume.
The USA Dub Mix of "The Look Of Love" by ABC is one of my favorites. It was one of the first times I became aware of the genius of Trevor Horn (Art of Noise was the other time). I also love the 12" of "Communication" by The Power Station. Awesome drums.
Wasn't that unreleased at the time of the single? I think the 12" held the smae version as the single. Appeared later on a compilation CD?
This is a B-side to Patti Labelle's New Attitude (Extended Version) Here's the details I have for Axel F (Extended Version) 7:09 Remixed by Louil Silas, Jr A_L
