No actually. I have most of the old Roost LP's and one Verve. Is it good?

Couldn't tell you if it's good or not. Might give it a try.

Well, Johnny Smith recorded for indie Roost, which later was absorbed by Roulette. That's a Roulette "Dynamic Stereo" title treatment, but I don't think any of the Smith Roost stuff was recorded in stereo.

    So, I dunno....

Hey Steve, if you dig Johnny Smith be on the lookout for an upcoming Mosaic set of his complete Roost/Roulette recordings. It's gonna be a whopping 7 or 8 discs i think!

I have a couple of his early Roost LPs, but they're in really bad shape.

While he's not nearly my favorite guitarist, I agree that "Walk Don't Run" is one of the grooviest tracks of all time!

Mosaic? Wow. Thanks for the info.

How can those guys continue to release those great box sets? I bet they don't even sell 1000 copies of some of them....

I thought that probably one reason Wes is so popular on this thread is the fact that DCC reissued some of his CDs so more people on this forum recognize the name or bought the CDs. Hmm...

Sorry Steve, I knew I'd miss someone. He is a great player from the era and probably should be on the list...

I first heard Gene Bertoncini on the Wayne Shorter Lp Odyssey of Iska. I don't have any of his own records but I've seen him perform here in Boston. He is known for his duo recordings and concerts with the bassist Michael Moore. Gene has a website at www.genebertoncini.com/gene/

How about John Pisano or Russell Malone

They have both toured with Diana Krall. Both have unique styles and is are phnenomenal pickers with great chord combinations. Check them out.

My top picks are Kenny Burrell- always in good taste
    Tal Farlow - real smooth
    Joe Pass- Class #1 musician

    Hey MagicAlex,

Do you think it's time yet for poll on your favorite bass player?

There are at least a half dozen greats that would afford the bass freaks a chance to post images of their favorit albums.

This guy should be one of the candidates:

Haven't heard from this guy in a while. Maybe it's because he's gone electric:

Of those listed I would have to say Barney Kessel. Has anyone ever heard "Slow Burn" on Concord. Talk about sick jazz/blues guitar. I would kill to have this on CD. Plus he played on Pet Sounds...

    John Pattittucci!

A bass player poll would be cool but you'd have to decide if you'd stick with acoustic, electric or both. I got to thinking of how many bass players there have been and it's an enormous list...it would be a difficult poll.

I'd never heard of him...at least I didn't think so. I do have some Shearing albums that he plays on. He totally slipped by me...

It seems he's disappeared. The photo came from a college web site up in the Northeast where it was coupled to an announcement that he had formed a new jazz group and was to begin a tour.

Far as I know, this is the only album still in print that features his playing (also on Concord Jazz).

    Aw, c'mon...

you could probably count the famous ones on one hand (which is not to say that there aren't dozens more but...)

Pattitucci is excellent, but I don't think he has the name recognition yet. So, for most casual jazz fans it's probably either Carter, Brown or Mingus.

My vote for acoustic bass goes to John Clayton
