Favorite Clint Eastwood NON-Westerns

Aside from the first four Dirty Harry films, and Eiger Sanction, I don't have much in the way of Eastwood in non-western roles.

I have seen bits and pieces of Play Misty For Me and will probably get that one next. I have also heard In The Line Of Fire is a good one. The "ape" movies were stupid, but I always had a dumb weak spot for them.

Having not seen many, I can't choose a favorite. So I'll be more a lurker here and soak up some Eastwood pointers in the process.

BTW: in Carmel, we had lunch at Eastwood's restaurant. Can't remember which sandwich I ordered, but they were all named after the films or characters.

A Perfect World isn't his best, but I like it.

I can't stand some of the mushy dialogue, even though it was pared down for the movie (not a fan of the book), but Bridges of Madison County had some good things going for it.

 

Since we decided in the western thread(kinda)that the DIRTY HARRY films ARE westerns--of the urban sort--here's a few faves:

1. IN THE LINE OF FIRE
2. WHERE EAGLES DARE
3. PLAY MISTY FOR ME
4. ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ
5. COOGAN'S BLUFF


Kind of in order, but the first two, a toss-up: both exceptional, though EAGLES is, IMO, very underrated.

In The Line of Fire is good. It even makes a reference to Eastwood's character being a jazz lover, though I cannot remember what was playing at his apartment as he's getting a call from the assassin (could be Kind of Blue).

Malkovich seems to upstage anybody else in that film. He an Eastwood are hardly shown in the same frame, however.

Where Eagles Dare for sure I can't wait for the DVD release - I had to get hold of a VCD last year because I couldn't stand the waiting and couldn't find a laserdisc.

Yeah, that one seems to be MIA, for no apparent reason. Just a fine action flick, and Richard Burton got one of his infrequent memorable, worthwhile roles. I saw this in the theater as a teen, and I never got over that pub scene with the luscious Ingrid Pitt , a lady probably only a Brit such as yourself, Andrew, would remember. She also starred in many horror flicks, and also wrote a column for some horror mag I can't remember the name of. Lovely lady!

My faves among movies that hold up pretty well:

3. Firefox

My faves among the wacky:
1. Coogan's Bluff. Love the hippies.
2. The Beguiled. This one is just bizarre in my book. But I'm going on memory a bit, haven't watched it in several years.
3. The chimp movies. For sheer chimpitude.

Oops. Should have had Kelly's Heroes on there too. Clint's not THE star, but still a really fun movie.

 

Nobody voted for "The Enforcer"? Gotta love it when Harry tells his boss "Your mouthwash ain't cuttin' it!"

 

I forgot about that!! Those Dirty Harry films had some classic dialog.

 

Would be even better if somehow "Burning Bridges" got mixed out of the soundtrack

These need to get on DVD.

 

"Countess Dracula" is her best (i.e. most nude scenes)and only real starring role, besides "The Vampire Lovers". She had many secondary parts in Hammer Film vampire movies, including "Vampire Circus", "Lust of a Vampire", up to '74's "Captain Kronos, Vampire Hunter".

"Tightrope" was a different, disturbing Clint Eastwood movie.

 

A very apt description!

That's my favourite, although that doesn't have much to do with Clint's performance.

 

Which film had him as a somewhat perverted detective who hang out i the seedy part of town? Wasn't that "Sudden Impact"? Or was it "Tightrope"? Trying to remember...I've probably seen both.

 

Anybody remember CITY HEAT with Burt Reynolds?

Heartbreak Ridge must be in the running for most gratuitous use of the f-word in movie history.

Anybody remember Clint's very early appearance in the silly monster movie "Revenge of the Creature" (of the Black Lagoon, that is)??

 

I'll have to go with "Escape From Alcatraz" a favorite of mine for years...

 

Bridges of Madison County. I don't know exactly why, but I really have a soft spot for this movie. And any movie that stars Meryl Streep gets a :thumbusup: from me!
