One of my favorite, which for years I didn’t even know it was a cover song, is “Dancing Barefoot” by U2. They just nail that song.
Michael Kiwanuka - Waitin Round to Die The Lemonheads - Galveston Nirvana - The Man Who Sold The World
Townes Van Zandt - My Starter Won't Start this Morning A song by the great Lightnin' Hopkins. Released for the first time on his 1969 album "Lightnin'". Lightnin' Hopkins' songs were part of Townes' live repertoire from the beginning. "My Starter Won't Start this Morning" appeared on Townes' live recording "Roadsongs" in the beginning of the '90s. "My starter won't start this mornin' Hope ain't nothin' wrong with my little machine Mechanic say "Your car's all right kid You just been burnin' bad gasoline.""
Cut in the Hill Gang - Promise Me Written by Jeffrey Lee Pierce and released on "Fire of Love", the groundbreaking 1981 debut album of The Gun Club. The cover is by the Covington/Kentucky band Cut in the Hill Gang, including Johnny Walker, Lance Kaufman, James Leg and Reuben Glaser. Johnny Walker is perhaps better known from the Soledad Brothers. "Promise Me" was released as the closing track on Cut in the Hill Gang's 2010 album "Mean Black Cat". It is perhaps lacking the feverish quality of The Gun Club's original, but I like the laid-back acoustic guitar sound of their version.
The Walkabouts - Albuquerque From the 1999 Neil Young tribute album "This Note's for You Too! A Tribute to Neil Young", released on Innerstate Records.
The Band's version of I Shall Be Released by Bob Dylan is great. My favourite cover though is Midge Ure's version of The Man Who Sold The World by David Bowie.
Ahem. While clearly this is one very obscure band covering another obscure band, to a select few this is a fascinating cover. ***** Galore covering Einstürzende Neubauten Others? Hüsker Dü - Love Is All Around Coil - Tainted Love Mission of Burma - 1970 Silkworm - The Chain Big Black - He's A Whore
Rats. Forgot about Sonic Youth doing a Peel Session of all Fall songs - 4 Tunna Brix. And to get meta, one of the songs is a cover of the Fall's Kinks cover, Victoria. And more alsos: Minutemen - Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love Bauhaus - Ziggy Stardust and/or Third Uncle Brian Eno - The Lion Sleeps Tonight Full albums: The Bridge: A Tribute to Neil Young Lost in the Stars: The Music of Kurt Weill
