Went to that every Friday night at midnight at a local brews-n-cinema type place. We yelled things out at the screen, like "Say it! Say it!" (during the "What kind of preacher are you?" scene) and "I smell a 'Nam story coming!" just before the 'Nam story scene.

  21. Another cult fav which polarizes folks...Zardoz which is so tongue-in-cheek and over the top that it crosses over from serious sci-fi to camp and back again.

Good call. While we're talking about John Boorman, I think that most of his other films could qualify as cult films: "Point Blank", "Hell In The Pacific", "Excalibur", and "The Emerald Forest" are what immediately come to mind - they're flawed, but also very interesting films. And "Deliverance" seems to have taken on a life of it's own as a cultural touchstone, but one that should be seen by all who have heard about it but never experienced for themselves. It's actually a tautly gripping, extremely well-directed film that, while difficult viewing at times, is excellent.
I've always thought that Boorman gets unfairly dismissed when talking about the great directors of the past 40 years or so - you never hear him mentioned with the usual suspects.

This has been on TV a few times lately and just gets better and better. The price on the DVD has recently come down to under $10.
