Besides "Half Stars", with just one verse performed, there were also many "Dark Star" jams, that had no verses sung. The one I saw at Boston Garden 6/28/74 out of "Mind Left Body" was brief, but there nonetheless. What's worse than a "Dark Star" tease? Not much!
i attended these. hard to say which was my favorite. they all had something to offer although i think the 72-73 versions would be right up there. 12/5/71 Felt Forum - Madison Square Garden New York NY 3/23/72 Academy of Music New York NY 9/27/72 Stanley Theatre Jersey City NJ 3/16/73 Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale NY 6/10/73 RFK Stadium Washington DC 8/1/73 Roosevelt Stadium Jersey City NJ 1/10/79 Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale NY 9/20/90 Madison Square Garden New York NY
I don't know if it was recorded, but my favorite version of "Dark Star" was one I saw the Dead perform live in Atlanta on Sunday, May 10, 1970 at the small Sports Arena. It was memorable because Duane Allman sat in & played second lead with Jerry. The Allman Brothers had driven up from Macon to lend the Dead some equipment that day and later sat in to play an encore set with the Dead. The opening act was Atlanta's Hampton Grease Band.
i saw the hampton grease band open for the mothers at the fillmore east in 71. great set and 3 encores. quite a feat in front of a zappa crowd although fillmore audiences would give everyone a chance and not just blow them off. from dead lists. Band Grateful Dead Venue Atlanta Sports Arena Location Atlanta, GA Date 5/10/70 - Sunday posters tickets, passes & laminates One Hard To Handle % The Other One Comments According to Barry Welch, who attended the concert, it was announced before the show that TWA had failed to deliver the band's equipment and they were going to borrow the Allman Bros' gear, and first the Allmans would play a set, and then the Dead would play a set, and then they'd Jam together. According to Chris Cole who attended this show it was an afternoon show and among the tunes played were Hard To Handle and The Other One. The Dead Jammed with the Allmans during the Allmans' set as well. DeadBase IX lists a Mama Tried and a Will The Circle Be Unbroken, the latter with the Allman Bros. Recordings none in circulation 10/00
As I recall, the Allman Brothers did not play a set by themselves, but sat in & played with the Dead as an encore set. That $3.00 ticket price was one of the best concert bargains I've ever enjoyed!
That's one of my favorite jams. The AUD recording of this sounds fantastic. http://www.archive.org/details/gd74-06-28.moore.weiner.gdADT18.16038.sbeok.shnf
You like that better than the Dicks Picks soundboard version? I might have to try that sometime, as I still remember after, ahem, 36 years, how it sounded from just above floor level stage right, about 1/3 way back from the stage. Lagin drilling holes in my brain, and bass notes bouncing around the hockey rink where I saw the Esposito brothers battle each other just a few months earlier. I believe Garcia was called for icing during "Loose Lucy". And Lesh called for "Ship of Fools" as an encore to "honor" the cherrybomb tossers in the crowd who should have been sent to the penalty box.
I forgot to mention another connection -- Glenn Phillips, one of the guitarists in the Hampton Grease Band, the opening act for that memorable Dead concert, later recorded a version of "Dark Star" with Henry Kaiser.
I like both. I've been on an AUD kick lately and I was just playing this AUD for the first time and was really knocked out by it. You could hear a pin drop as the MLB jam unfolds. The good AUD's from the Wall of Sound period (such as 6/23, 6/26, 6/28, 8/6) have a real nice shimmering, spacious sound that's sometimes lacking from the SBDs.
Well, believe it or not, that's the first version of Dark Star I ever heard (on the Long Strange Trip comp.). I had read about Dark Star's iconic status, but when I heard it I thought "Why does this get so much praise?". A few weeks later I bought Live/Dead and then I knew exactly what all the fuss was about! I have a few other Dark Stars on some of the Dick's Picks sets but my favorite remains the one on Live/Dead. I also have the Greyfolded 2 disc set and like that quite a bit. I only saw the Dead twice (Deer Creek 07/15/89 and 07/18/90) and no Dark Stars . Although 07/15/89 did have a pretty good Space with Jerry playing the 5 note "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" theme on his MIDI rig. I've often wondered if it was the closeness of Noblesville to Muncie where the beginning of the film was set (but not actually filmed there). IIRC, it did get a reaction from the crowd?
there's also the 7-7-69 one from Piedmont Park, Atlanta, a free show where the Allmans opened...Duanne and Greg jam with them, but not on the Dark Star afaik, a sweet show! ....I saw Henry Kaiser do Dark Star in SF in about 1989, I didn't know Glenn Phillips played on the Those Who Don't Know History... CD (???) I LOVE the Hampton Grease Band !!!!! I also have a Henry Kaiser 3 inch CD where he does my other fave Dead song, Mason's Children...
i'm full of envy.in 75-76 i lived in Atlanta & went to the Bistro a number of times to see Bruce Hampton -great,amazing shows.i was a big Glenn Phillips fan & bought a copy of his 1st album direcly from him-i just showed up at his house ! also saw Harold Kelling several times playing at a bar in Emory Village. only saw the Dead once:Vanderbilt University,Nashville,10/21/72.unfortunately, no Dark Star, but they did play a fine The Other One.
That free Piedmont Park concert took place after the first Atlanta Pop Festival at Hampton Raceway on July 4th weekend. Amazingly, the Allman Brothers and the Dead were not booked for the festival. The Piedmont Park concert started in the afternoon and went on into the night, with a thunderstorm/power outage delay. Local bands Radar and the Hampton Grease Band opened. In addition to the ABB & the Dead, acts that had played at the festival -- Spirit, Chicago Transit Authority and Delaney & Bonnie & Friends also played. My memory is hazy, but the Dead closed the show and at various times were joined by Duane & Dickie, Glenn & Harold, Delaney, Randy California and Terry Kath.
i attended that one too. i recall getting up there and scalping a ticket. i thought the first set was very disjointed and was thinking to myself, 'i came all the way up here for this?' but the second set was amazing. like a different show altogether, at least to me. i remember phil dedicating the ship of fools encore to the idiots inside the boston garden lighting off fireworks.
I started hanging out at the Bistro in the late '60s when I was in high school. Since I was underage, they would stamp "no beer" on my hand. In 1970, when I was old enough to drink, I saw Mike Nesmith play solo there. Between sets he joined my friend & I at our table and shared a pitcher of beer with us as he told some stories about his Monkee days. But I digress...
I go short and long... The original studio version and the massive near-50 minute mamma-jamma from Rotterdam in 1972
Damn, was AT Gulfstream Racetrack for that show, and it was the first time I'd ever heard of the Dead. They spent a lot of time that day warming up their instruments, but I came away liking em a lot...
