I was wondering about this earlier, and, with music being a key role in a movie, what is the greatest movie soundtrack (in your opinion)? As for vocal music, my pick would have to be O' Brother Where Art Thou, the music toys with my emotions better than any other soundtrack I've ever heard, as for instrumental, I would have to go for the first Harry Potter film, with Jon Williams' epic and enjoyable conduction and composing style, it is a movie soundtrack that will get stuck in your head very easily. What are your favorites?

One of the greatest has to be Edward Scissorhands. I can't listen to it without choking up. That finale--man. Such a beautiful melody. I also really like Elfman's Batman score. I remember hearing it for the first time as a kid, in that darkened theatre. John Williams wrote many well-known scores of course, but I think all his stuff is great: something like "Prologue" from Hook is a fantastic, exhilarating piece of music, even though it's not as famous as say ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jaws, Superman, Schindler's List, et cetera. Some random ones I like: The Untouchables, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, Mulholland Drive, Barry Lyndon.

I have just recently purchased the Movie DVD and CD music from the film Midnight Cowboy.
I mistakenly thought for many years that “Florida Fantasy” was a “Focus” composition and so
searched their releases without success = No suprise!

An Electronic / Dance / House combo “K-Klass” sampled Florida Fantasy under the title “Wildlife” in 1990, which further added to my confusion.
Eventually learning that it was in fact a John Barry (of James Bond fame) composition.

Dustin Hoffman’ performance in the movie as Ratso Rizzo, sorry “Enrico” is outstanding.
Anyway a great film and timeless sound track.
2 more on my list would be Lawrence of Arabia (Maurice Jarre) and The Big Lebowski.

Beautifully melodic, pensive, occasionally dark/uplifting in equal measure, with just enough reference to Irish folk/instrumentation to let you know what it is about.
Some lovely guitar work too. I used to listen to it a lot but have not for quite a while. I was at a Christy Moore concert at the RFH London the other night and they played from this album
for about 15 minutes prior to taking the stage - I guess Christy likes it too.

Dumb and Dumber. Is that wrong?

Anything by John Barry would probably be a more sane selection though.

The Badalamenti Soundtrack for 'Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me' is one of my favourite albums period. The expanded 'Twin Peaks Archive' material is all worth listen too (There is a thread on it somewhere).

I also love Neil Young's soundtrack to the Jim Jarmusch film 'Dead Man'. Great stuff.

Tom Wait's 'Night On Earth' soundtrack is also a personal favorite.

Basically...any soundtrack to a David Lynch or Jim Jarmusch movie is likely to have a very good soundtrack.

A cool recent soundtrack is the 'Guardian's of the Galaxy' one. Its a good fun listen.

I'm a big fan of soundtracks, especially the big orchestral film scores. John Williams, James Horner, Randy Edelman, Michael Giacchino, those guys.

My favorite film score of all time is James Horner's The Rocketeer. I've never seen the movie. Field of Dreams runs a close second behind it.

When I look at my iTunes play count, a different soundtrack comes up as most-played. Jim Dooley's score for the first season of Pushing Daisies has far more plays than anything other score in my collection.

One more score that I play very frequently is Michael Kamen's score to Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
