One of my favorites (and a favorite movie) that uses existing songs:

    McCabe & Mrs. Miller

Songs: "The Stranger Song", "Sisters of Mercy" and "Winter Lady" from Leonard Cohen.

An EP, which I never owned, of the Leonard Cohen songs was released. Of course the songs are on "The Songs of Leonard Cohen". I'm not aware of any other release of a soundtrack besides the EP.

Yeah, I forgot about The Commitments, excellent version of 'Mustang Sally' on the soundtrack CD. Anyone know what Andrew Strong is up to these days?

Long Riders-Overblown movie but a great Ry Cooder soundtrack.

The King of Comedy-Great song selection and very good original Robbie Robertson songs that you can't get anywhere else.

    Carny-Another great Robbie Robertson soundtrack.

Another big vote for the Rushmore soundtrack. I play this all the time.

While I find almost ALL of John Williams scores to be beautiful pieces of music, I also find the following Soundtrack songs or scores excellent...

    Somewhere In Time John Barry
    Edward Scissorhands Danny Elfman
The Nightmare Before Christmas Danny Elfman
Ilea's Theme from Star Trek The Motion Picture Jerry Goldsmith
Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory
The Surrey With The Fringe On Top from Oklahoma
and the best song ever from a motion picture...

"Feed The Birds" by Julie Andrews from "Mary Poppins"

I haven't really got my thinking head on today :) so the best I can come up with are

    Star Wars
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    The Song Remains the Same
    and
    Yellow Submarine

Although there are some fantastic tracks on it - I can't really listen to the whole of Pink Floyds - The Wall - I just find it too depressing

    All the best - Andrew

Talking about soundtracks. I had a very dear friend who passed away in 1981. Can you imagine he had -EVERY- recorded soundtrack -EVER- released on LP! It was unbelievable.:)

Sooooo many to choose from, but some of my faves would be

    A Hard Day's Night
    Help!
    Yellow Submarine
    The Italian Job
Get Carter (the original '71 flick w/Michael Caine, not the dire Stallone rehash)
    The Harder They Come
    Christiane F
    Quadrophenia
The Wall (does this one count? - I'm thinking of the original LP not the reworked stuff for the film)
    Chariots Of Fire
    Bladerunner
    The Lost Boys
In The Name Of The Father
    Backbeat
    Pulp Fiction
Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels
    Eyes Wide Shut
    Million Dollar Hotel
    High Fidelity
    Vanilla Sky

BTW, is Saturday Night Fever still the biggest-selling soundtrack album of all time - anyone know? I'm not a fan but the girlfriend is!

    ...maybe I should check hmv.com....

Does anyone have the soundtrack for The Indian Runner? It's always one I look for when I'm in used CD stores, but have never even seen it. I'm interested as a fan of David Lindley's music and am curious what the original music on this disc sounds like.

Don't remember if anyone mentioned Paris, Texas, by Ry Cooder. Some good stuff there.

    >>>>I'm always looking for a copy of the STEREO Lp "The Glen Miller Story" on Decca. 1954 movie studio stereo, outstanding sound on the pressings made from the first stamper.

Local Hero--forgot that one, but someone else remembered.
Also forgot Mishima, another Philip Glass score.

and more recently Glass's score for Tod Browning's 1931 Dracula. I got it on hi-fi VHS. I liked it, very nice. Won't give you a headache!

Also, the soundtrack to the early nineties movie "Singles", which introduced the world to the seattle bands Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains.

and just remembered the soundtrack to the lame movie "the last american hero" which had a couple of neat Alice In Chains songs, and a AC/DC song produced by Rick Rubin. He recorded them as if they were some southern rock band, but it worked.

I normally don't like Glass's scores; however I enjoy his Kundun score very much. Nice sound quality also on this.

Or how about Lalo Schifrin as a classic film score composer. I enjoy his work in the following movies-

    Bullet
    Mission Impossible
    Enter the Dragon
    Cool Hand Luke

Hell lets keep going with classic composer.
    John Barry-
    Out of Africa
    Dances With Wolves
    Bond Movies
    Born Free
    Cotton Club

    "Song" soundtracks:

    The Wizard Of Oz
    The Band Wagon
    Kiss Me Kate
    High Society
    Pal Joey
Camelot (OBC version /w Julie Andrews)
    Gigi
    Gay Purr-ee
    Mary Poppins
    Bells Are Ringing
Robin And The 7 Hoods :)
    Paint Your Wagon
    Jackie Brown
    Blues Brothers
    Round Midnight

    "Score" soundtracks:

    The Sea Hawk
    Gone With The Wind
    Two For The Seesaw
    The Pink Panther
The Sandpiper - I really love the way a single theme ("The Shadow Of Your Smile") is presented in a million different ways)

    The Honey Pot
    A Man And A Woman
    Bullitt
The Thomas Crown Affair (The original version /w Steve McQueen)

Sleuth (a fantastic movie w/ Michael Caine and Laurence Olivier with a brilliant score by John Addison)

Who Is Killing The Great Chefs Of Europe (you either love or hate the movie, but it's a shame the soundtrack has never been available, because it's probably the best of Mancini's "late" work, much better than those dreadful "Darling Lili" or "Thornbirds" scores)

    Star Wars

A post I made in the "creepiest/scariest music" thread reminded me...

One of my favorite uses of a pop song in a movie would be the sequence in Blue Velvet with Roy Orbison's "In Dreams" playing in the background. I've never listened to the soundtrack separate from the movie, but I guess that would be another favorite. I also like that instrumental blues shuffle which I think was composed by Angelo Badalamenti.

Then you should take a listen to one of **my** favorites, which is the soundtrack to "Cousins", also by Mr. Badalamenti

    Love those dreamy waltzes...
