I'm also quite fond of The Beatles Anthology and Martin Scorsese's George Harrison docoumentary Living in Material World.
Absolutely wonderful and joyous documentary about Bill Withers which I cannot recommend strongly enough: Still Bill Trailer: http://youtu.be/vRetUqQbDc4 I also enjoy Scratch: http://youtu.be/G_u7s8NDz9o This is not so much about music, but about maybe a culture around a particular kind of music, in this case Norwegian black metal which I found absolutely fascinating, called- Until The Light Takes Us. I really enjoyed "John Hammond: From Bessie Smith to Bruce Springsteen". There's some good historical information there and a lot of neat video clips too, some of which is still pretty rare I think. I love that footage of Jimmy Rushing singing "Take Me Back Baby". This is one of those that I keep the laserdisc player around for as I'm not sure if it ever made it to DVD.
Live Forever - The story of Brit Pop. The Story of Creation Records "I need that record" story of decline in record stores Blur - no distance left to run
Oh, and DUH, I totally forgot The Buena Vista Social Club. Wim Wenders, Ry Cooder, and an incredible group of musicians. I would love to see this film released on BD with lossless hi-res audio some day. I mean, if you don't own this album, you can't be my friend. Trailer: http://youtu.be/Gc6HFT_3zqQ
Not music exactly, but anyone here who hasn't seen it would likely enjoy "I Need That Record: The Death (or Possible Survival) of the Independent Record Store". Streaming on Netflix or here http://www.crackle.com/c/I_Need_Tha...vival_of_The_Independent_Record_Store/2485759
Many great ones mentioned, like Hail! Hail! Rock N Roll and Beyond The Lighted Stage. The recent Iron Maiden documentaries are great also: The Early Years Part 1, The Early Years Part 2, Flight 666, En Vivo. I want to make special mention of these two: Metal: A Headbanger's Journey Cliff 'Em All
Beautiful Dreamer: The story of Brian Wilson's 'Smile' The Beatles Anthology 25 x 5 - The Rolling Stones Story
glad to see this listed. My friends Steve Helvey and Brian Levy put this together. It didn't do much for them when it first came out, maybe its aged well!
I don't watch many rock docs. These two I have watched more than once (the Dion "doc" is the bonus DVD):
Forgot to mention: Funky Monks on the making of Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Another great one.
25X5, the Knack Live, and my Criterions of A Hard Day's Night and Help! are the only reasons my laser disc player is still hooked up.
