Always dug this Durer self portrait. Like a template to what's possible in terms of human awareness.

This one hangs in my local museum. It's "The Green Bridge II" by Lyonel Feininger. I love the colors and how it's painted using arcs. It has a funky feel.

What a great thread. Simple and unexpected.
That Gombrich book must have been the first introduction to great paintings for many Gen Xers.
Here's the painting that always entranced me from the edition I had.

Can't pick one, prefer Genres. Old Masters , impressionists,symbolists,surrealists/Dada ..preraphalites..some modernists, all depends. Not a painting but Dali's swimming Pool bring's a smile to my face :)

My favorite, too. When I was a kid, our family dentist had a framed print of Starry Night in the waiting room.

Well, thank you, my friend. I'm glad you like the thread.
And, yes, that portrait by Rembrandt is a marvelous piece of art.

Velasquez is my favorite painter and Las Meninas is astounding. But my favorite painting is Picasso's "Guernica." Don't miss the chance to see it in person; it's breathtaking.

I can never look at that portrait (or even hear the name "Durer", for that matter) without thinking of Monty Python's Fliegender Zirkus. :)
